Mumps is a viral disease caused by the mumps virus (Epidemic parotitis) an RNA virus in the family Paramyxoviridae. The virus is primarily transmitted by respiratory secretions such as saliva, as well as via direct contact with an infected person. Painful swelling of the parotid glands, called parotitis, is the most common symptom of a mumps infection.

Mumps is caused by Paramyxoviridae, a single-strand RNA virus.

Symptoms include:

Fever
Headache
Muscle Pain
Loss of Appetite

The main symptom is a painful swelling of the parotid glands, called parotitis.

According to an article posted by Shih-Bin Su in pubmed in 2020; "Between 2016 and 2017, there are numerous mumps outbreaks occurred throughout United States. To reflex these urgent events, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended a third dose of MMR vaccine for groups of persons justified by public health authorities at increased risk for acquiring mumps due to an outbreak of mumps."

Vaccination is the best way to prevent mumps, this vaccine is included in the combination measles-mumps-rubella (MMR).
Don't share items/biological fluids with someone you suspect or know to have mumps.
Cover sneezes and wash hands!
Disinfect shared surfaces.

To diagnose mumps a doctor/physician will generally preform a physical examination of facial features which will include swollen tonsils and any palpitations. The physician may recommend the following treatments:

Blood test to identify the infectious microorganism.
Swab test.
Cerebrospinal fluid test (extremely rare)

Mumps is generally only dangerous for patients that are extremely old or young or those with previous conditions, as such treatments for mumps includes the following:

Over the counter pain relief such as ibuprofen or advil.
Drinking water to avoid dehydration.
Bed rest/isolation.
Warm or cool compress.
