In the beginning, Utterson and Mr. Enfield are on one of their weekly strolls - a very normal event that occurs very often. But as the transformation occurs when Mr. Enfield spots the strange building and recalls an event that he'd witnessed; this is the spark of Utterson's detective behaviour throughout the story as he delves more into his suspicions. To Utterson, it seems that Mr. Hyde so clearly pursues all of Dr. Jekyll's inheritance, "waiting for the moment he'll die", and Dr. Jekyll, who is aware of Mr. Hyde's intentions does not complain nor admit to being blackmailed. He instead defends Hyde's position and calls him a character of interest, and asks Utterson to honor his will to Hyde; this seems very unusual - and unconvincing. All the abnormalities of their relationship start clicking into place, and this becomes the most significant transformation of all - two characters that were introduced as separate people to readers, is actually one person battling between his good side and dark side. He appears to be the first and possibly only person to have ever witnessed the transformation firsthand, and eventually dies of shock after writing his letter to Utterson. He elaborates that the events he saw were too horrific to be described. This changes the themes within the story as it reveals it is about holding up reputation and the importance that it held to certain people and the extremes some would go through to protect it.
