         <title>How do we reference law reports? </title>

         <title>What is a neutral citation?</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Neutral case citations were introduced in January 2001.They are a unique reference given to a particular judgment by HM Courts and Tribunals Service. Unlike most citations, neutral citations do not refer to a specific report of a case, but to the judgment itself.</p><p><br></p><p>For cases after 2001 include the neutral citation followed by the <em>Law Reports</em> citation (e.g. AC, Ch, KB, etc). If there is no neutral citation, give the <em>Law Reports</em> citation followed by the court in brackets.</p><p><br></p><p>Example of a citation including a neutral citation:</p><p><em>Callery v Gray</em> [2001] EWCA Civ 1117, [2001] 1 WLR 2112 [42].</p><p><br></p>]]></description>

         <title>What is the easiest way to find case law </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Yes-if using a direct quote from a book always include the page number (or paragraph, depending on the type of resource you are quoting from). An example would look like this-if quoting from page 32 of "Tort Law" by Steele.</p><p><br/></p><p>J Steele, <em>Tort Law: Text, Cases, and Materials</em> (5th edn, OUP 2022) 32.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>Remember: </strong></p><p>·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Quotations of up to 3 lines are included in the text, within single quotation marks</p><p>·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Place longer quotations in an indented paragraph without quotation marks</p><p>·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Use an ellipsis (…) to indicate any original text you haven’t included.          <title>I’m used to Harvard referencing. How different is OSCOLA?</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>They are quite different-we advise you to work through the <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://padlet.com/redirect?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmy.leedsbeckett.ac.uk%2Fwebapps%2Fblackboard%2Fcontent%2FlistContentEditable.jsp%3Fcontent_id%3D_4849978_1%26course_id%3D_168743_1%26mode%3Dreset">materials we have placed online.</a></p><p>The main difference between these two systems is that the Oxford method uses footnotes to place references at the end of each page, whilst the Harvard method includes certain information within the text.</p><p>There are other slight difference (e.g. authors' names cited in footnotes as forename or initial first, followed by surname).</p>]]></description>

         <title>Is Westlaw or Lexis better?</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The reason the Library subscribes to both Lexis and Westlaw, is that each contains some things that the other doesn't. We always advise to be thorough-use both.  </p><ul><li><p>Westlaw includes the valuable search tool <strong>Legal Journals Index</strong> which allows you to search by keyword across a huge selection of journals. However not all the journal articles will be available in full text. Don't worry-many of the articles will be available within Leeds Beckett Library  on a different database.</p></li><li><p>Lexis contains the excellent legal encyclopedia "Halsburys Laws of England".</p></li><li><p>Both databases contain different journals and law reports.</p></li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p><strong>You can add a footnote in which a citation can be added, to PowerPoint by:</strong></p><ul><li><p>Clicking on the "Insert" tab.</p></li><li><p>Clicking on "Header and Footer".</p></li><li><p>Ticking the "Footer" box.</p></li><li><p>Choosing "apply to all".</p></li><li><p>You can then add footnotes in the footer boxes that appear on each slide.</p></li><li><p>You may wish to move the footer box so it appears on the left corner of each slide.</p></li></ul>]]></description>

         <title>Do you have to reference a definition? If so how? </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p><br></p><p>You don't usually need to cite a dictionary definition, e.g. from Oxford Dictionary of Law. It depends on how you are using the definition in your work.&nbsp; If you are simply using a dictionary to check your understanding of a particular concept or word, (you are not using the words, ideas or theory of an author) you do not need to cite it. </p><p><br>If however (and less likely) you have a particular need in your work to cite a dictionary definition, for example, if comparing varying definitions from several dictionaries, then cite these. An example:</p><p>Jonathan Law, 'stare decisis',<em> A Dictionary of Law </em>(10th edn, OUP 2022).  </p><p>&nbsp;</p>]]></description>
