The first orca to be caught in the North Eastern Pacific was a orca named Wanda. She was caught in 1961 by a collection crew from Marine Land of the Pacific. Over the next 15 years around 60-70 orcas were taken from pacific waters for this purpose. Majority of the orcas on display in the west are in the US, Canada, Argentina, Spain, and France, 29 of 38 were born in captivity. In the east, 6 of the 7 displayed in Japan are captive born. An additional 13 orcas in China and Russia were evidently captured in Russian waters.

All captive adult male orcas have collapsed dorsal fins, likely because they have no space in which to swim freely and are fed an unnatural diet of thawed dead fish. SeaWorld claims that this condition is common—however, in the wild, it rarely ever happens and is a sign of an injured or unhealthy orca.
