<title>Understanding Gun Violence by UMD Dept. of Sociology - Equity and Justice Committee</title>
      <link>https://padlet.com/landrist/xb0g120p0uguqrnc</link>
<description>The U.S. is host to an exceptional amount of gun violence relative to other countries. From 1998 to 2018, the rate of gun homicides has remained fairly high, increasing only from 4.21 to 4.42 per 100,000 (a). The increase in mass shootings has been more dramatic, and in 2021 there were 692 mass shootings, a 13% increase from the prior year (b). These rates are certainly cause for concern, but it&#39;s also important not to lose sight of individual shootings. Each event--each shooting--pulses like a shockwave of national trauma, and in its wake, we struggle to process and make sense of what happened. The Equity and Justice Committee created this Padlet as an effort to begin pulling together media and social scientific findings on guns and gun violence. At present, this curated collection of content is woefully incomplete, but our hope is that everyone in our department will contribute posts of their own in order to fill in the gaps. All posts are welcome, from published research to personal commentary. Ideally, this Padlet will help people to more fully grasp the problem of gun violence and may even spur research on the topic. Like any bulletin board, your posts can go anywhere you like. We&#39;ve included arrows to suggest a possible order, and we&#39;ve grouped some posts by color to designate related areas of research. | (a) CDC (https://www.cdc.gov/injury/wisqars/index.html)
