Irena Sendler would smuggle children in the Warsaw Ghetto Area in Poland to safety. To do this she would mainly smuggle them into orphanages, convents, schools, hospitals, and private schools.

Irena was a hero to many. There are many important dates of her rescue. This includes, October 20, 1943, where Irena was placed in a notorious Piawiak prison. July 24, 2003 where Irena was announced the winner of the John Karski award for Valor and Courage. And finally, October 23, 2003, where the award ceremony was held in Washington D.C.
Irena also worked with a group called the "Zegota." This group would smuggle children in things like potato sacks, or even coffins. Irena was in charge of the Children's Division.

Irena Sendler saved many children, by risking her own life. Irena also had a book written about her, and a project called "Life in a Jar." This, however, wouldn't have been possible if it wasn't for a group of students doing research. Before, Irena was barley known. In fact, there was only one website that had mentioned her After these students visited Irena in Poland, her story had become more well known. After hearing about this project, Irena gave many thanks to to these students. For example, she had said, “My emotion is being shadowed by the fact that no one from the circle of my faithful coworkers, who constantly risked their lives, could live long enough to enjoy all the honors that now are falling upon me.” Irena passed away May 12, 2008, at the age of 98, but her story will live on.
