Two quotes from the rising action of "The Necklace" is, "She was the prettiest one there, fashionable, gracious, smiling, and wild with joy," (pg. 202). Another is, "Clasping it around throat, outside her high-necked dress, she stood in ecstasy looking at her reflection," (pg.202). The significance of the two quotes is to show that she finally achieved a selfish longing that she wanted from long ago because she thinks she is worth better than what she is now. It also hints at a little bit of foreshadowing of that her happiness will not last long as you get a sudden feeling of future irony along the lines of the story, that things won't go well in the end. These quotes also reveal more of Mathilde's personality as a greedy, self conscious person that only cares about herself only which makes us engage into her character style more.

Symbol

A major symbol from the rising action of "The Necklace" written by Guy De Maupassant would be the diamond necklace itself. A diamond represents love, elegance, and luxury- all of which are shown as Mathilde danced the night away during the lavish party she was invited to. However, by losing the necklace she was forced to abandon her life as a highly sophisticated woman; she lost her luxury and was forced to live a life as a peasant woman in France. By losing the diamond necklace, her love and luxury, Mathilde suffered ten years of working and eventually turning into a weary, old woman. In addition to the fact that she had lost her aristocratic life by losing the necklace, a diamond necklace also represents status or ranking in life. Before misplacing the diamond piece of jewelry, her life was grand, rich, and classy. However, after the diamond necklace incident she had become as lowly as a laborer in the streets of Paris, France. The diamond necklace is a mere image of love, luxury, and social status.
