I walked campus for 15 minutes to explore how this space shapes social interaction and who gets access. I used Springgay & Truman’s idea of walking as embodied research and the AIF suggestions by noticing traces, signs and social flow to guide my observations.

I chose our St Johns campus because I live and attend school here but never slowed down or explored. I go to class and back. During the 15-minute walk I noticed how movement shapes meaning: most people flowed along the main path and avoided the shaded side paths, which were quieter and showed more wear (broken benches, litter). That contrast suggested implicit rules: keep to the center if you’re “passing through,” use the sides if you’re staying. Springgay & Truman’s emphasis on embodied attention pushed me to record not just what I saw but how I felt. The AIF questions made me pay attention to little details like desired paths, posters, and the traffic flow of people. These things tell real stories about the area, not just the “official” ones. I also noticed how power and access show up in small ways: most of the benches were near Montgoris or Marillac, or how most couches were in DAC because it's easier to study or lounge. When I talked to someone who has been attending for 3 years, they told me little fun facts and places to study or eat. FUN FACT: the St. Johns emblem in DAC is supposedly sacred and that if anyone steps on it- you don't graduate. This walk made me realize that spaces aren’t just there, they’re shaped by what people do every day, like who walks, who sits, and who gets ignored.

What makes this space different from others?

Our campus stands out because it's a mix from individuality and Community. People walk around with their headphones and faces down to their phones while others are with friends and chattering in the spaces.

What are the implicit rules/norms of this space? How do people navigate and understand them?

There are a bunch of unspoken rules to keep to yourself unless you’re in a social spot. People respect personal space but also greet familiar faces. The library means quiet; the student center means socializing.

Who has entry to this space, and who does not? Why?
Technically anyone can walk through, but being a student or staff gives you full access to resources like the library, labs, or lounges. Without an ID, you’re kind of an outsider, but there are many non-student people on campus throughout the day, whether its touring or just someone walking their dog.
What do you know about this space, and how?

Most of what I know comes from being a student here and noticing how people use the space.
