We have secured a new partnership with the Free The Bears NGO based 1 hour drive from Phnom Phen, Cambodia. This grassroots organisation is working towards protecting the sunbear, the smallest bear species and best tree climber, sadly at risk due to human activity within the rainforest, tourism, palm oil industry, bear bile medicine trade, the pet trade and other negative factors. Sunbears are often found in appalling conditions and are in dreadful health when rescued, by conservation groups. The GC will learn how the NGO supports the health, rehabilitation, and releasing of sunbears, as well as education about the activities putting them at risk, and actions to prevent this. In MS there is an annual trip to Cambodia for our students to visit many of our GC partners, on this trip, students, parents and teacher trip leaders will have the opportunity to visit  Free the Bears and undertake hands on work at their conservation centre.

This NGO runs a smaller project, Ladli, which provides vocational skills, handicraft, Hindi, English, art and dance to street children, in a bid to break their cycle of poverty. They also run a soup kitchen, providing food to over 3,000 children daily and have two child care centres, one for girls and one for boys, with which UWCSEA East has a strong connection. This GC group aims to develop a friendship with the children in the centres, as well as raise funds to support them. The GC also supports the vocational training program to empower women who make handicrafts at the Ladli home for girls. Led by a team of active and passionate social workers, psychologists, teachers and even lawyers, Blue Dragon has been able to make incredible progress in Vietnam by providing these children with education and health care while also rescuing and providing counselling for trafficked victims. Saving over 1000 human trafficked victims in South-East Asia and helping out with legal advocacy and safe sheltering, Blue Dragons has been focused on working towards SDGs 10 and 16.
As a GC we work towards two main goals. One is fundraising to support Blue Dragon and their projects, and a second is to give Blue Dragon children a chance to come to Singapore and interact with us and our community. This also gives us the chance to see the people that we are helping and share in reciprocal learning experiences. Additionally, while they are here we involve them in our community by performing in joint events, such as a circus with our East circus group and Dover’s talent show.

Their mission is to educate and empower girls from poverty to become community leaders. Without secondary education, the girls are often sent into premature marriages and pregnancies. Daraja believes education is the bridge out of poverty hence the name ‘Daraja which means ‘bridge’.

This Global Concern aims to raise awareness and advocate for gender equality and girl’s education. This is in line with SGD 4 (Quality Education) and SGD 5 (Gender equality). We take part in annual activities such as Run for Rights, product selling at Family Festival and WISH classes in order to raise funds and advocate for Daraja in the UWCSEA community. The GC spends time finding new ways to communicate both directly and indirectly with the girls at Daraja. The GC implements more direct methods of communication with the girls such as Skype calls, pen pal letters and the annual Daraja service trip.
