The Mayan Civilization was one of the most dominate societies in Mesoamerica. They differed from other indigenous societies because they were centralized as a community in modern day Guatemala. The earliest evidence of the Maya Civilization dates back to 1800 B.C, where they focused on farming. Evidence of pyramid building and city construction also dates back this time period. The peak of this civilization began in 250 A.D. when it expanded to 40 cities with 5,000 to 50,000 populations.

The Mayan people were a majority of farmers which was evident because all of the Mayan cities were surrounded by enormous farming lands. Although they practiced the slash and burn type of agriculture, they showed advanced farming such as irrigation.
The Mayan people not only used farming to grow as an community but also religion. They believed in gods who were related to nature. They often prayed to the gods of rain and corn for a good harvest. They believed nature was determined by their relationship with their gods.

The advances of the Mayans originated in the Olmea tribe, which came before the Mayans and influenced them greatly. From farming villages to first roads through the jungles that expanded hundreds of miles. Mayans relied on the Olmec for the technology which they had and yearned to make it better. Using the Olmec solar calendar, the Mayans using their knowledge of astronomy, made the most accurate calendar in the ancient world. Another advancement of the Mayan people includes the ability to hold fresh water underground in case of droughts and the most notable would include the system of writing, the hieroglyphs.

The Mayan are most known for besides their advances with writing and improving the calendar, is their artwork in stone. They built monumental structures such as pyramids and palaces for religious purposes and for governmental purposes. One of the recognized type of Mayan sculpture was called a stela, which was a stone slab with carvings and writings. The purpose of these sculptures were to show honor to kings, which were believed to be a descendants of the gods. Unfortunately the work of Mayan painters was ruined by Spaniards when they nearly destroyed all of heritage of Mayan civilization because they believed it was a devil worshipping society. The paintings that survived included scenes of religious activities and daily life.

End of the Mayan Civilization

One of the most questionable historical disappearances of an entire society, would be include the mystery of the Mayans. At the peak with 19 million civilians and arguably the most sophisticated civilization in the Mesoamericas, it seemed impossible for the end of this empire. Since the Mayan people were more religious and peaceful then war-like, the odds of a rival tribe taking over would be near impossible. Today scholars and historians understand that many cities of the Mayans were abandoned because of natural causes, such as drought and deforestation. The lack of supplies also affected the tribe because the more they used their supplies without replenishing the resources, resulted in further distances to reach simple supplies. Until finally the Mayans decided to scatter in various directions resulting in the abandonment of the Mayan Civilization.
