They found evidence at other (native american) sites that showed things only the colonists from that time would've had, which suggests that either the colonists assimilated into Native tribes or, they were looted and killed- but had that happened, there would've been more clues left at Roanoke

I believe that a drought led to the disappearance of Roanoke. Due to a drought, the colonists may have joined other Native tribes and groups. I think this because in the text it said, "The cypress growth anomaly map for the Jamestown drought, 1606-1612, reveals that the most severe drought conditions during that period occurred in the Tidewater region near Jamestown?".

Croatoan was the name of an island south of Roanoke. The colonists engraving this word into the pole probably meant that the colonists would travel there. Eventually, they may have assimilated the culture there.

I think that the colonists were running out of resources to use, and so they settled with an Indian village to survive. Croatoan was the message that they left to say that they had moved, as their remains were never found.
