“ We are even so selfish as to talk about “after the war”, brighten up at the thought of having new clothes and shoes, whereas we really ought to save every penny, to help other people, and save what is left from the wreckage after the war.” This quote really resonated with me because it shows Anne’s humility and that she knows she is extremely privileged. She also expresses the idea of helping survivors of the war (page 64)

The way Anne talks about how they have never celebrated before but that this was a good way to start makes me very sad. And makes me wonder what Anne could have done if she hadn’t been discovered.

“The period when I caused Mummy to shed tears is over. I have grown wiser and Mummy’s nerves are not so much on edge. I usually keep my mouth shut if I get annoyed, and so does she, so we appear to get on much better together. I can’t really love mummy in a dependent childlike way-I just don’t have that feeling. I soothe my conscience now with the thought that it is better for hard words to be on paper than that Mummy should carry them in her heart.” Omg this is so hard. I know I’ve already done 2 on this page but this page really really shows how much Anne has matured in just a year. Seeing these complicated feelings put in such an articulate way is pretty rare and I feel much more connected with Anne. It’s so interesting to be able to see what someone thinks like this, and I’m so proud of Anne even though I know she’s like, my age while writing this. (Page 128)

“Sometimes, in a flash, I saw something of her life. But a moment later I was selfishly absorbed again in my own pleasures and problems. It was horrid of me to treat her as I did , and know she looked at me, oh so helplessly, with her pale face and imploring eyes. If only I could help her! Oh, God, that I should have all I could wish for and that she should be seized by such a terrible fate. I am not more virtuous than she; she, too, wanted to do what was right, why should I be chosen to live and she probably die? What was the difference between us? Why are we so far from each other now?” Oh my goodness. I think that this shows Anne’s desperation very well. And it’s a great reminder that Anne’s story is one of the most glamorous of the holocaust.

I then became so furious that I stuck my tongue out at them in the street just as an old woman happened to pass by, who looked very shocked! I rode home on my bicycle, and I know I cried for a long time” she’s STILL mad about this. Girl move on you were like 9 years old. When we first started reading I had a very hard time focusing and understanding what Anne was talking about because she would describe such simple things so intricately. I think that this quality of her writing by the end of the book really actually helps the story.

I cannot imagine being locked up in the same tiny 4 rooms for 2 whole years. I wonder what it was like when she was discovered, what was going through her head? I would assume she’d be terrified, but maybe she’d also be happy to be free. Like a weight had been lifted off of her.

But knowing that she had only had 2 months before she would’ve been freed is so heartbreaking. I’ve read another book about the holocaust called “all but my life” and it’s an autobiography from a woman who survived many labor camps and a death march. She was found and saved by American soldiers a week after Germany had surrendered. I wish Anne had known how little time she had to make it before she would be free.

Got the diary before the war and decided to record everything 2. Had the diary be saved and not taken by the people who invaded her home. 3. Had Otto survive the war and return home. 4. Had Elli and Miep remember to save the diary. And also having Lies survive to remember Anne before she died. It makes me wonder how many Life’s were forgotten in the holocaust. So many peoples family and friends and neighbors and coworkers were straight up just murdered. How many people were just completely forgotten? How many family lineages were ended? I’m glad we have Anne’s diary. I think it reminds us of the horrors humans are able to commit.

I think that everyone has an inner personality that they don’t show the world. I wish it wasn’t like this, and so does Anne. “ I can’t keep that up: if I am watched to that extent, I start by getting snappy, then unhappy, and finally I twist my heart round again, so that the bad is on the outside and the good is on the inside and keep trying to find a way of becoming what I would like to be, and what I could be, if….there weren’t any other people living in the world.”
