What does this mean in terms of image quality?
This means that the quality of the image is reduced as any colors not part of that 256 color palette is lost.
what is dithering?
dithering in terms of GIF is a process of juxtaposing pixels of two colors, to create an illusion where it appears a third color is present.
What does dithering do to the file compression of a GIF?
dithering increases the size of the file, so when the compression of a GIF file occurs, more pixels are lost.
How would you keep a GIF animation file size small?
The file size of a GIF animation file can be kept small via cropping any extra space in the images used. also reducing the amount of colors used in the images.

It stands for Graphics Interchange Format, and is usually used for short animations, however it may also be used solely to reduce file size.

GIF is a type of lossy compression as it has a limit of 8 bits per pixel, meaning that there is only a possible 256 colours that can be used, rather than some file formats 16 million.

GIF formats use RGB colour profiles, and can be anything from #000 to #FFF on the palette.

GIF file formats are the most commonly used format for animations. Because of the low file size, multiple of them can be shown on a webpage in succession to create the illusion of a moving picture (albeit stuttery). This may slow down a webpages loading time, but it may be seconds faster in some cases if you used a format such as .png to do the same job.

GIF formats are most commonly found online.
