ISR 1 - Die Grüße

First I have decided to look online for more information about formal and informal greetings (=Grüße) in german and found a webpage (https://www.thoughtco.com/greet-a-german-formally-and-informally-1445086) that contains some additional greetings to those we were taught in class such as: Grüß dich and Grüß Gott (specific in southern Germany and Austria). I also found a youtube channel specifically targeted towards beginners that contains many videos on the subject of greetings https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2u_1OBb5cRg, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mS0EV3laEk&t=291s, as well as teaching you how to introduce yourself in german: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r94aqLUO0wo. What I really appreciate about these videos is that they show ordinary people interacting which allows you to observe the natural flow of the language.

I started practicing the numbers on Quizlet and completed the tests and games associated with ‘ Zahlen 1 – 20’ and ‘Zahlen 20 – 100’. I also looked up some youtube videos in order to hear the right pronunciation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IjIYFeAzV0, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juXWp1DT-_k and done a couple of exercises on https://german.net/exercises/numbers/1-20/. I found the exercises to be useful as they reinforced the vocabulary although they were a bit repetitive.

I decided to search online for ways of telling the gender of nouns in german based on their final letter/letters. I learned that the noun's gender usually follows the gender of people, e.g. der Onkel, die Schwester and that nouns ending in -er, -ich, -ismus, -ist, -ner are usually masculine, nouns ending in -e, -ei, -heit, -ie, -ik, -in, -keit, -schaft, -tät, -ung are feminine and nouns ending in -chen, -ium, -lein, -o, -um are usually neuter (https://www.dummies.com/languages/german/identifying-a-german-words-gender/). I also found an app called 'Anki' where you can create your own flashcards with nouns and their corresponding articles which is extremely helpful.

I found a website https://www.iwillteachyoualanguage.com/ dedicated to teaching languages through stories and which also offers tips and advice on how to study more efficiently. I find it helpful to see how others deal with the process of learning a new language as it allows me to compare my knowledge and how my language skills have improved and perhaps find things I have to work more on.

I have completed a few Duolingo stories out of curiosity and found them relatively easy. I also learned some new words like 'Iggit" ('Yuck') and 'die Kerze'. I practiced the vocabulary associated with the chapter ('Guten Appetit!') on Quizlet which combined with the exercises I have done in the coursebook, gave me a pretty good grasp of the new vocabulary.

I watched a couple of Youtube videos about the accusative case in german: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuXxNSj_y5w - what I like about this one is that it also goes through some practical exercises while explaining how to use this grammatical case correctly - and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xm4wjKUj8S0. I then completed the exercise on https://www.schubert-verlag.de/aufgaben/uebungen_a1/a1_k03_im_cafe.htm which was useful as extra practice.

Continued to use Anki a little to practice vocabulary even though it relies on memorising words without any kind of context. I don't find that to be a good method of studying at least for me and I will try to switch to some more practical methods. I decided to practice pronunciation using the "Redemittel" section in the coursebook to revise for the speaking exam.

I have decided to work more on my listening skills by watching and listening to german films, TV series and music. I found some interesting films/Tv series such as 'Er ist wieder da', 'Dark' and 'Babylon Berlin' which gave me an insight into german society as well as some historical events that were of great importance. I found it really useful to be focused for a couple of hours just on listening and understanding spoken german and see how native speakers sound on a day-to-day basis. I practiced using modal verbs by doing exercises in the coursebook and online. I find the basic theory on how to use modal verbs easy, however sometimes I still make mistakes and I have to work more on this in the future.
