In 1951, Alfred Wegener said that the only possible answer to the fact that South America and Africa look like they could fit together, was because of continental drift. he suggested that 300 million years ago all of earths masses which were in constant motion formed a super-continent he called Pangaea. most scientists in this time period did not agree with the theory because Wegener could not explain a force that could have been strong enough to move continents. until the 1960's there was no technology to develop his theory further. by 1968 new technology's were created , making the theory of plate tectonics.

Since the idea of plate tectonics was introduced in the 1960's scientists have verified and refined this theory, and now have a much better understanding of how our planet has been shaped by plate-tectonic prepossesses. it has come to be know that, plate tectonics influences nearly all geologic processes, past and present.the idea that the entire Earth's surface is continually shifting has profoundly changed the way we view our world.

Directly above the focus, a second point called the epicenter marks the corresponding point of highest-intensity shock on the surface. Shock waves propagate like ripples from the focus and epicenter, decreasing in intensity as they move outward. Sudden earth movements along geological faults. There are two kinds of quakes, tectonic(plates that make up the earth's crust cause a fault) and subduction-zone quakes.Volcanic activity when lava builds up to high pressures and energy is release in the form of an eruption.

Volcanoes are openings in the earth's crust created when molten material under the crust is propelled upward though the surface. The magma chamber collects the magma that is pushed to the surface in an eruption. examples can be; Destructive, with large lava flows or explosive activity. Hot debris particles called pyroclastic are expelled during violent explosions. Heavier pieces land near the crater and lighter pieces can be carried by the wind for hundreds of miles.Non-destructive, with little release of solids or magmatic liquid. These eruptions occur when the magma is more fluid and contains less gas. The solids or magma rocks and lava cools on it's slope.
