This article is interesting because despite Ireland's position as a hub for global technology companies, the country's health system lags far behind when it comes to effective use of technology and lacks an integrated electronic health record (EHR) for its citizens. The article however, says that this could be beneficial as Ireland finally rolls out eHealth solutions. This is because we can look at other countries and determine which systems work well and which ones don't. The article also points out that in certain countries, EHRs have been rushed in and badly implemented as a result. Will Ireland take the opportunity to make something better?

Why is this article interesting?

This article is interesting because it highlights the fact that Ireland is unlikely to meet the target number of people they had planned to be vaccinated by March. This is interesting and also disheartening because it suggests that lockdown will continue to be extended in this country if not enough people have the vaccine. This article suggests that the government are over promising with regards to the vaccine, instead of being up front with an honest timeline. I found this article interesting because it made me question when enough people will really be vaccinated for us to go back to normal life.

This article is interesting as it highlights that the overwhelming majority of investment from the public sector globally has been on the development of a vaccine for Covid-19 rather than on treatment development. The article references a report by the kENUP foundation which outlines that while the majority of investment was committed through AMCs to ideally accelerate the availability of the vaccine to low and middle income countries, so far the vaccine rollout has benefitted high earning countries. With the potential for global herd immunity a long way off, the article outlines the concern that treatment development for covid needs to be prioritised more in order to bridge the gap in vaccination administration globally.

This article analyses how Covid-19 deepens global economic and health inequalities.
Why interesting? The article shed light on that poor and least developed countries went into the Covid-19 pandemic with a low-resourced healthcare system, which decreases the ability of early detection, rapid response and mitigation of virus. The news also mentions that the Covid-19 vaccine divide between rich and poor nation is worsening by the day, as the WHO director-general Tendros Adhanom noted - "Rich countries are rolling out vaccines, while the world's least-developed countries watch and wait".

This is significant as there are many problems with current treatment which is largely dependent on daily pill taking. The article outlines how this might reduce stigma, make life easier for people with HIV (specifically women), and encourage more people to stay up to date with their treatment. The study is not definitive but it is an interesting and promising new line of research.

It looked at both sides from the service user to the user provider. The pressures faced in Somerset are representative of all local authorities across England who are struggling with budgets to cater to a demand from an increasing ageing population. I Found this article very interesting as I believe it is very relatable and most people will know someone (friend, relative, neighbour) who has needed some form of assisted living as they get older, whether that my home help or moving into a nursing home. This article also outlines how funding can be procured and the stark realities many families face in order to protect and assist their family members.

This article outlines the crisis that the mental health system in Ireland is facing as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. As it stands the mental health system is not resourced to deal with what the article deems “a tsunami of mental health need”. I find this article interesting as it looks at a system that was already in crisis pre Covid and provides examples by patients within the system and their experiences. Ireland is behind other countries spending only 6% of its overall health budget on mental health. For example, in the UK and Germany it is 12% and between 10 and 12% in Scandinavian countries. According to professionals, Ireland develops very good plans but does not have the resources to develop them.

Coronavirus: The possible long-term mental health impacts. I find this article interesting because the Covid-19 outbreak has increased anxiety for many and experts are now warning that a significant minority could be left with mental health problems that outlast the pandemic. While many people have experienced increased anxiety during Covid-19, for others the problem is more serious, with Covid having ignited or aggravated more serious mental-health problems. The impact on wellbeing may mean that for some life will not return to normal following the panedemic. A minority will continue to be affected by long-term anxiety. This highlights that the mental health impact of the pandemic could last much longer than the physical health impact. Historical data would appear to support this view. Long term mental health impacts include: psychological distress, PTSD, elevated rates of depression, anxiety, and related disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder. Also chronic lonliness, stress or suicidal thoughts have greatly increased. Goverments are going to have to provide a pathway for societies to thrive post-pandemic, and to offer messages of resilience and hope, otherwise our already over burdended mental health services will not be able to cope.

I also found it interesting because domestic violence victims are included in the group of people being refused because they're not in their locality. Many doctors are arguing that some terminally ill patients deserve to have the choice for a medically assisted death.

Ireland's first mother and baby mental health unit.

Why found this article interesting is that it shows that Ireland is slowly in implementing plans related to health care. Mother and baby mental units are for mothers suffering from mental illness.

At the the child's birth, the mother and child would often be separated due to the mother mental health. Psychologist have found that separation of mother and child at birth is not good for the child nor mother. Also in 2016 an estimated 40-60% of women stated that they would potentiality benefit from mother and baby mental units hence the plan to make them accessible.

This was since 2017 that the plan was doing to be implemented. This shows that their are lags in implementing plans which seems to be an issue within the Irish healthcare system, and the budget seems to be the common issues as to why these plans dont fall through. Not finding way to implement this plan will lead to lack of accessibility of the needs of mothers with mental illness.

It describes not only barriers that have been created to accessing sexual health care, but also discusses difficulties patients have faced since before the pandemic in accessing health care. The article is important in that it highlights stigma that still exists, particularly around HIV, and how this prevents these patients accessing the same standard of health care. This raises issues around the aspect of safety, regarding the security of a patient's private and sensitive information, and patient-centredness, as this goes against the supposedly trusting relationship between doctor and patient. It also could be considered under the aspect of equity, as this targets children with disabilities specifically and so could be argued that it is discriminatory treatment of a certain group.
