Thus, creates the identity of Kedah houses which can't be found at other state in Malaysia.

This trip has been an eye-opening experience for me as it taught me to develop deeper appreciation for traditional buildings. These traditional houses incorporated different kind of design principals relevant in contemporary architecture such as shading, ventilation & etc. In addition, the interesting part of of these traditional houses is the ornamentation and each of the ornaments represent different meaning as well as Malay culture. I have learnt that, despite the building technology and the modern architecture are getting more advance and the people started to forget the beauty of traditional buildings. But, modern buildings and traditional buildings are utterly incomparable. The building design, construction and ornamentation of traditional buildings represent something even though it is old but priceless.

However traditional buildings require significant maintenance compared to modern construction. From the house that i have measured,it seem that the house and the material of the house have the problem of decaying and termite problems due to the tropical weather as well as the time.Traditional House in Malaysia could represent certain country's identity, history ,beauty as well as culture. It is very important,so we have to maintance, preserve and educate the following generation to protect it.

|| Started from scratch, appreciating details. ||
We were all clueless, filled with curiosity. The journey began without knowing what to expect, or what to do in exact to complete the task in a proper order, or to carry out the task in a certain way, to ensure we were on the right path. It was all unknown to us. But only the unknown gave us the window to explore, to figure out, to find our own way to achieve our goals. With no doubt, this field trip was a new experience. It felt a step closer to reality, facing issues and jobs that are closer to my passion. Precision and details were the puzzle pieces that we were all trying to work together, to put it together and make it a whole. We encountered several problems throughout our way, but we still manage to get everything in order.

During this 5 days, it shown me how much soul this traditional building has. Every joint, every wall, every detail, every form, was filled with its own unique cultural background. Its a story that was well conserved, it reflects the conditions of the people and environment during it's period. It made me wished that buildings can always speaks for itself, can always has it own ways of expressing a story. It made me came to a realization that as technology progressively develops, the building losses it's soul. It made me question why and how, and I'm determined to find the answers to all my questions.

The field trip was a great learning experience, especially it was all a hands on work. It definitely opened up my horizon in noticing even the slightest little details that we always took for granted of. Never have I had an experience like this, and despite all the challenges, it felt amazing to work with all the people that had the same passion, working towards the same goal and helping one another to achieve them all.

The house looks plain and simple from the outside, but there are ornaments and details that make it so fascinating, especially the joining of the woods without nails. I have learnt to appreciate old traditional buildings, that represent the country's culture and history, not to admire only just modern buildings that are seemingly identical. Traditional building is our identity and our pride, we should learn to appreciate the beauty in it and preserve them.

It was hard at first but i was able to get use to measuring in such precise and detailed ornaments. Although our buildings are both old traditional kampung houses, it is interesting to find out more about the malay culture and history. To understand more how traditional malay people live. Sadly to say that the historical story and understanding of that building is inadequate, it is hard to extract or to research on the information about the building. However, i am confident that despite all of these challenges, my group and i will do our best in executing this project. Furthermore, despite all the hardship we get to appreciate more about the building and learn how to preserve its historical architecture.

It manipulate wind condition, solar orientation, humidity and other environmental factors for benefit of its inhabitants. Not to mention, the decorative ornamentation and all the joint part without using any artificial material show its own identity of Kedah tradisional house.Although we faced difficulties during measuring the small simple looking house due to some of the wood were damaged, but it was a great experience as we manage to pulled it through.

Although I had mixed feelings when there was a change of buildings we were assigned to from the 200 year-old palace to the traditional Malay Kedah house, this trip still proved to be a fruitful experience for me. We initially had thought the plain traditional house wouldn't be as interesting as the palace but we were also relieved that we didn't have to measure the shabby, abandoned building which seemingly looked so unsafe to enter. Yet, after days of fieldwork, the traditional Malay house was equally as unique and impressive in its own way.
This trip gave me a learning opportunity to understand how a traditional building is inside out as the first-hand experience of measuring, documenting and examining the ingenious technology in traditional architecture had made the troublesome time measuring the dusty house worthwhile. I have learnt aplenty and be appreciative of the timber details, the ornaments that represent the Malay culture, the nails-free construction technology and the spatial form in vernacular architecture. Besides, the traditional house was a good example of how a building responds to a tropical environment and reflects the culture of the Malay people in their daily life. Thus, it is important that we conserve and preserve traditional buildings as they bring character and individuality to our heritage and culture. All in all, this fieldwork gave me significant insight on how I look at buildings and their dimensions and I had a great experience working on-site with my team mates.

Through this trip, i realized that i have to pay attention to my surroundings, cherish and appreciate other's culture, it is an eye open experience. I never thought that Traditional Malay Houses will be quite challenging to be measured, since our group got Istana Sepachendera then quickly shifted to traditional Malay houses which was smaller in scale and 'pressumeably' easier to measure and draw. But its complexity of construction and interesting ornaments makes this house difficult to measure. Through this experience i believe that I need to appreciate traditional houses and how it was made before.

To be honest with it, I have no clue on what to do and what should be done when we were given the task. Even so, I’m great to have a group of teammates who is willing to share thoughts and ideas, and also willing to get the work done no matter how tough and complex it is. During this trip, we were given the task to document traditional malay house, in which provided me the chance to gain knowledge regarding the architecture of these traditional houses. I was amused by how the people those time came out with the techniques to build structures like this ( Traditional Malay Houses were built without the use of nails ), the ornaments and carving on the facades of the Malay houses also fascinated me a lot, prompting me to appreciate traditional buildings much more.

The architecture, people and even the food are so memorable. 3E to describe my whole journey- Elegant, Experience and Explore. Most of the building is influences by Thai architecture as Kedah and Thailand have a very firm relationship in history.

The traditional Malay house is designed towards climatic comfort in a house in the warm and humid Malaysian climate and environment. Traditional Kedah Malay houses are always raised on timber stilts or pile to elevate and protect the building from floods and also serve as a source of natural ventilation. No nails are ever used in a traditional Malay house as pre-cut holes and grooves were used to fit the timber together. Roofs of these houses are typically steep and have wide overhangs for shading and protection from tropical downpours.

Last but not least, I am very grateful to work with my teammates and it surely will be an unforgettable moment throughout this short semester!

0322802

For me this trip is great that I have a chance went to Kedah and explore myself with an architecture design of kedah tradisional house. I was impressed by the kedah traditional house design by its construction method the houses is built up by using construction of joining method and which is different with those concrete house that we seen in our daily life. When I entered the house i feel peace and calm and the air ventilation of the house is designed in the unique way which i feel fresh when i doing measure drawing and measurement inside the house for whole day.
