I chose this play scene because the children here are talking about making "yucky" soup. I enjoyed observing their imaginative use of mud, pebbles, grass, and snow. Very imaginative!

This is a video I watched about a year ago, where two children are taking part in make believe play. I was drawn to this video of play, because of the conversation between the two children and the connections they make. They display their knowledge of colors, while also using their imagination to create something out of the colored balls. "I want apple pie" says the little boy, and the girl hands him a purple ball "here is your apple pie" and he responds "no I want red apple pie." This simple yet beautiful conversation brought me joy, and also shows how important the observation of play is, we see how children communicate, connect, and image. The creativity here is also an aspect I was drawn to, the shopping cart full of apples - made me wonder why did they choose apples?

We do this every day. Dramatic Play in the morning, and building in the afternoon. Our readings this week just served to reinforce my dedication to this Zone of Proximity method that we engage in, and the strengths it brings out in all students. And I am grateful for the space and time to also observe their interactions, scaffold their play and behaviors, and simply enjoy the mess!

These children chose to go to the dramatic play center, following the read aloud Pizza Pokey, by Jeffrey Stoodt, and class discussion. I observed the children take the play food out of the cabinets and put it all over the table. They also put the dolls on the table. I observed A. Put the pizza in the oven. When the children were asked what they were doing the students responded”, This is our pizza restaurant. We are pizza makers. We make all different pizza pies. We give them to the people.”

This was actually a play scenario in our classroom very recently. My favorite time of year with the twos is now - they come back from the winter break with so much new language, and they are really beginning to initiate and navigate collaborative play!
