Gilbert walks to school everyday. While this is isn`t that uncommon for American students to walk to school, they usually start getting driven to school around middle school. Additionally, the distances that Gilbert had to walk were unlike most American students.

"I was among the farthest away so my walk began relatively calm."

As Americans, we are exposed to a large amount of techonology that is not availabe to a large part of the world. For example, many of us cannot be without our phones for more than a class period. However, this was not the case for Gilbert. He did not even sit in a car until he was 8. Gilbert did not have a phone but cars are essential to American life, some families even have more than 1, but they were not a neccesity for Gilbert. (pg 61-62)

Throughout the novel, Gilbert describes running as an escape for him. Because of the troubles of a normal high school student as well as the truamatic experinces of the genocide. I as well use running as an escape. Whenever I am having a rough day, I feel a little bit better knowing I can go for a run later.

just had to endure this pain a while longer and I would be free. If I could just float above it, let my disembodied legs do what God had blessed them to do, I would survive this pain, break through to the other side, find the ecstasy of release that kept me pushing long past the point when my mind said surrender." (Tuhabonye, 1)

(Tuhabonye, 76)

At this point in the story, Gilbert is happy but anxious to start a new chapter in his life, secondary school. While he is excited that he passed and looking forward to being further away from home, he does not want to leave his friends and family. As a high school senior, I understand this feeling very well. These are my excact emotions toward leaving for college. I am excited but unsure about being on my own.

" I was grateful to the priests for exposing me to the teachings of the Catholic Church."

Gilbert discusses how important the Catholic Church is to him as well as his friends and his family. In the U.S, religion is very popular. Personally, religion has helped me a lot thorugh many tough times because of the community that is involved in it. Additionally, this helps to develop one of Gilbert`s values, forgiveness.

Forgiveness- After surviving a horrific genocide, Gilbert has said that he has forgiven everyone involved. This is a very courageous thing to do especially after many of his former friends and classmates attempted to kill him. This shows how strong Gilbert is as a person to understand what happend was wrong, but not to blame anyone. “Even though two of my father’s brothers had been killed by Hutus before I was born, we held no resentment against them. In fact, I grew up hearing about how it was a Hutu man who came and informed my grandmother of the death of three of her sons. This Hutu man also assisted my family in the burial. Later, once we had grown more prosperous, we also employed several Hutus to help work on our land." (Tuhabonye, 19-20)

Grateful- Gilbert is very humble. He is very appreciative for what he has in life and tries to not take anything for granted. "We were in high spirits, since we were not able to have meat regularly... While we waited, we did what we usually do whenever the family got together- we sang songs." (Tuhabonye, 33). When has meat, he realizes this is a special occasion, and does not take it lightly.

Work Ethic- Gilbert is an extremely hard worker. When it comes to school, he is one of the smartest in his class and cares deeply about his grades. His work ethic also carries over to his running. In the beginning of the story he mentions that he has multiple colleges looking at for track. (Tuhabonye, 3).

Loyalty- Throughout my life I have always believed that loyalty was tremendously important. I truly believe that loyal people will be rewarded for being true to people and their cause.

Ambition- I believe that in order to be successful in life you need to be ambitious. I have learned this from school and always trying my best to get the highest possible grade. This will hopefully translate into my adult life.

Generosity- Finally, being generous is the most important out of all of these. Whether someone is having a bad day or needs to borrow something, being generous shows them that whatever is wrong, everything it going to be alright.
