The bombing of Pearl Harbor by Oscar Bailey https://padlet.com/obailey001/xahnnd7t0p7v4rrh Made by Devon H. and Oscar B. en-us 2021-01-25 19:50:56 UTC 2024-06-01 08:15:50 UTC hello@padlet.com https://padlet.net/icons/png/1f6e9.png obailey001 https://padlet.com/obailey001/xahnnd7t0p7v4rrh/wish/1124132034 Leading up to the 1941 bombing of Pearl Harbor, the relationship between China and Japan had become more aggressive.  In 1937, Japan and China “clashed” at the Marco Polo Bridge and had open warfare as Japan was trying to take control over Manchuria, the northeast region of China.  This had a significant impact as it began war between Japan and Chinese parties.  It also became the first time that the United States loaned money to China and began ending resource support to Japan, which lead to more conflict between Japan and the United States.  
In 1939, the U.S. wanted to end the 1911 Treaty of Commerce and Navigation with Japan. The U.S. stopped shipments of useful war materials such as petroleum, metals and oil to Japan. In 1941, Japan made an alliance with Germany and Italy to get their revenge on the U.S. 
According to Britannica, “although Japan continued to negotiate with the United States up to the Pearl Harbor attack, the government of Prime Minister Tojo Hideki decided on war.” 

This means, that Japan was planning war on the United States, the negotiations were useless. The attack on Pearl Harbor could not be stopped from happening.

This was historically significant because Japan saw an opportunity of growth and power if they partnered with counties similar to what the United States was doing. The competition of resources led to conflict as the U.S and The European Countries wanted to have an “open door policy” to be able to trade with China.  Japan, however, didn’t want to trade their items with other countries. According to historian David M. Kennedy “Each [nation] stepped through a series of escalating moves that provoked but failed to restrain the other, all the while lifting the level of confrontation to ever-riskier heights” This means that as Japan wanted more power  the United States also looked for ways to cut off Japan’s source of power. The attack at Pearl Harbor by Japan was historically significant because it lead to the US declaring war on Japan.

President Roosevelt soon after declared war on Japan. This was historically significant as Japan’s solution to the struggles between the U.S. was a military strike. In addition, very few people thought that Japan would launch a attack on a remote island like Pearl Harbor. More people thought they would attack a European colony. Pearl Harbor was not very well defended and many of the US Navy’s Pacific fleets were docked at Pearl Harbor. 
According to Gale in Context “Japan’s goal in carrying out the Pearl Harbor attack was simply to destroy the Pacific fleet. With the fleet out of commission, US forces would be unable to stop Japan from seizing control of the South Pacific.“ This means Japan had an advantage over the US as the U.S. was not ready for the attack.   This was historically significant as the U.S. response to the attack on Pearl Harbor was to declare war on Japan, and as Japan was an ally of Germany, Germany also declared war on the U.S. and the U.S. entered WWII.

The leaders wanted to round up all the Japanese Americans and put them into detention camps. This was historically significant because some the Japanese were innocent and the Americans didn’t think that was right. In February 1942 the US War Department made 12 places that were restricted for the Japanese internment camps. They also put night time curfews, and if they broke curfew they would get immediate arrest. In mid February, 1942 the President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 which gave the US military to exclude any person that are in the restricted areas. Also everyone soon realized that the Japanese were being targeted. According to Britannica the federal War Relocation Authority (WRA) was created to “take all people of Japanese descent into custody, surround them with troops, prevent them from buying land, and return them to their former homes at the close of the war.” This means that many who were innocent were forced give up their possessions. This was impactful to our history as over 120,000 Japanese Americans who were previously living freely in the United States were detained during a war that President Roosevelt had hoped to avoid.

This was historically significant because this revenge cost destruction of the cities and the death of over 120,000 people from the explosion, plus many more would die later due to exposure of radiation. 
The United States use of the atomic bombs was in hope to end the war quickly with Japan and avoid more deaths and gain power.
According to History.com Editor, “Japan’s Emperor Hirohito announced his country’s unconditional surrender in World War II in a radio address on August 15, citing the devastating power of a new and most cruel bomb.” This means that the US won the war and Japan surrendered, a celebration for the U.S. was announced. 
Therefore, the evidence supports that the U.S. got revenge on Japan’s initial bombing of Pearl Harbor, by dropping the devastating atomic bombs on Japan.
