This famous speech was from Ronald Regan who expresses his concern for those caught in between the Wall. He calls upon General Gorbachev, with the world watching, pleading for him to recognize the harm that is being done to the Berliners. He shows his dislike and how many were left separated and unable to live freely. He believes the Wall was simply taking away the human rights of those in Berlin.
Behind me stands a wall that encircles the free sectors of this city, part of a vast system of barriers that divides the entire continent of Europe. . . . Standing before the Brandenburg Gate, every man is a German, separated from his fellow men. Every man is a Berliner, forced to look upon a scar. . . . As long as this gate is closed, as long as this scar of a wall is permitted to stand, it is not the German question alone that remains open, but the question of freedom for all mankind. . . .
General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization, come here to this gate.
    Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate!
Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!

Gerta Lowe explains the challenges her family faces one morning when the Berlin Wall was built unannounced. Armed soldiers pilled into the streets, keeping the citizens prisoners in their own home. Her family is unable to contact her father and brother who been searching for work in the west and are now fending for themselves in the opposite part of Berlin.
“Lines of Grenzers— our nickname for the border police, the Grenztruppen — stood guard along a fence of thorny wire, in some places higher than their heads, and for as far as my eyes could see. They stood like iron statues with stern expressions and long rifles in their hands. It was obvious that anyone who tried to cross would get far worse than a rip in their clothes. Because the Grenzers didn't face the westerners on the other side of the fence. They watched us. It was very clear who they planned to shoot if there was any trouble...My father wasn't here. Nor was my brother Dominic. They had been in the west for two nights, and were suppose to have come home later today. With an endless row of guns and soldiers between us, the fence just changed that.

This helped Germany reunify within itself and the dismantled the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.
East Germany’s Peaceful Revolution, of which the destruction of the Berlin Wall was a part, heralded the demise of Communist control of Eastern Europe and eventually the dissolution of the Soviet Union. On March 18, 1990, East Germany held elections in which the Communists were voted out of office. This action paved the way for German reunification, which was formally concluded on October 3, 1990. At first the country was hampered by vast cultural and economic differences, but most of these differences dissipated over time, with Germany emerging as a strong democratic state and member of the European Union.

Horst Köhler, who served as the German president from 2004-2010 explains the importance of the German Reunification. He states how it brought an end to the Cold War as well as the end to the East-West division that separated so many people from families and jobs. With this, Germany took off with economic growth as both sides could now benefit from one another.
German reunification was a monumental moment in history that showed “the unthinkable can happen,” Köhler said. “Reunification stands for hope even under the most adverse conditions,” he said, adding this history of German reunification was also a history of great political leadership. Without the then-Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev’s reform policy of glasnost (openness) and perestroika (restricting), for example, Köhler maintained German reunification and the end of the Cold War would not have been possible.

The article goes into detail behind the biggest argument for the Berlin Wall. It explains how it kept the sides even with the educated and experienced workers who carried out the important jobs. At the beginning many were fleeing to the east, but with the wall, it kept the west alive too. This also allowed East Berlin to prove they were trust worthy to allies, as the west was no longer connected to them.
The Berlin Wall was built as a way to keep East Germans from fleeing to West Berlin—and it has worked. Thousands of people, including highly educated and skilled workers, were crossing over the border to the West each month before the building of the Wall. Afterward, that number has been cut to near zero. The Wall has also successfully blocked the passage of Western spies and other subversives into East Berlin. Because of the Wall, the Soviet Union can successfully promote the status of East Germany as a sovereign state—and a solid ally

The effects are still being seen, with lower number of jobs and salaries in eastern Berlin and tensions between people from both sides. Although the fall reunited many families, it helped create equal opportunities for workers that is no longer being seen.
Today, Germans talk of a ‘wall in the head’ – the psychological effects of division that haven’t gone away. Salaries are considerably lower in eastern Germany, and unemployment higher. Studies show that both easterners and westerners continue to view each other in unflattering terms. Beyond Germany, it’s clear that old notions of Western and Eastern Europe still endure, even within the European Union. This produces tensions between the EU’s member-states and serves as an obstacle to integration.
