Boosting student voice on social media is a great way to get more engagement and build community. Facebook can be used to keep parents and families in the loop, while Instagram and TikTok are perfect for student-led content like event promos and “day in the life” takeovers. Getting students involved in making videos, celebrating college acceptances, and even starting an alumni program can help create stronger connections with the community and promote our program. There are many ways to demonstrate strength and grit. Forcing or expecting students to write about traumatic experiences is not the way to do it. This reminded me of the Winter Sidequest that I worked on with Natalie, which leads students through finding an appropriate topic and developing their college essays

This reminded me to evaluate and keep in mind the privilege and resources I've been given and put myself into the shoes of the students we are serving. Many of them were not encouraged to go to college, many don't understand how to get there. This will be helpful when advising the teachers of these students, whether they are urban or rural, and think through the specific challenges they face.

I was able to learn more about how our family team decides which activities to do with families within our school communities as students advance through each year of the grant cycle. The session also talked about key data points to look at and collect for family teams. They also discussed best practices for communication with parents to get them more involved in students’ education.

This session was a good reminder for me to be mindful when posing questions during my interactions with teachers or in lessons that I write for LEARN. I have to consider not just how I would answer or interpret the question, but how it would be responded to by others as well.

I think this session led to some good discussion during activities while in breakout rooms. It was a helpful exercise to go through since we are working with middle school teachers right now. The activity that Brittany mentioned in her post was the highlight for me as well. The activity involved considering the needs of students with different circumstances and meeting them where they are. We have to do this with our teachers and encourage them to do the same with their students.

The speaker in this session posed some great questions for the participants to consider. My main takeaway from the session was to double down on all of my efforts at K20 to try and make postsecondary education as accessible as possible for all students. Like Corrie mentioned in her post, I had the privilege of growing up in a financially stable household with parents who encouraged me to go to college and speak with counselors about scholarship opportunities. Many of the GEAR UP students that we work with may not have that same luxury, so I need to do everything I can to promote and encourage students to pursue postsecondary education/career opportunities.

My main takeaway from this session was to make sure that I tailor the content and tone of my communications to my audience every single time. Clarity and transparency are more important than sounding eloquent all the time, which is something that I feel like I can be better about moving forward.
