DEPENDS
- reputation (mainly on skills and experiences)
- character (more personal)
- first hand, reputation matters more but in the long run, character matters more
- especially for jobs. Example, if youre a CEO, as the face of the company, reputation matters. As a lawyer, reputation matters too; if ur reputation is bad, no one will approach u.
- character can overpower the reputation. for example, a restaurant can only be hiring people with disabilities (character) however, the food and standards may not be as high as compared to others (repuation)
- reputation has to be good to get hired and not fired.
- reputation is not important if a person is at the stage of his life where they just want to live simply without complications.
- reputation have to be maintained but characters stay.

1) Varies (Yes): Be true to yourself → Dependant on how close to the people/individual you are

2) No: But differs when a person is put in different situations (groups) when surrounded by close minded group more likely to feel judged and insecure on the other hand, a more open minded group of people would be more willing to accept of the person's individuality and character.

3) Yes: Potential connections that would be useful in the future (For almost everyone you meet)

It could be both depending on the situation. If we are to concern with how people think of us, it will cause us to feel inferior, change our perception, behaviour etc as it will affects us mentally and we will be psychologically unhealthy. However, if we feel that we are living for ourselves and that we shouldn’t care about what others think, sometimes this can make our personality or character be more narcissistic and arrogant. By being concern or not about how others think, we have to think and reflect if such thinking will affect us positively or negatively.

Yes. We should be concerned about what people think of us. This is due to the fact that looks matter a lot in the workforce. For instance, the President of the United States has to dress formally in a suit and tie and not in a tank-top.

An instance, the Dalai Lama's reputation dropped due to the child kissing incident earlier this year, resulting in a dip in CIA funding to the Dalai Lama and Tibet's covert operations as well as donations from the general public since their view of the 14th Dalai Lama, breaking the veil of holiness that he had.

We should also be concerned about what people may assume of us. This is due to the fact that first impressions matter a lot. This phenomenon is known as the Halo Effect(not the Halo games on the Xbox)
which is the tendency for a positive impressions of a person or brand in one area to positively or negatively influence one's opinion or feelings in other areas. As such, this may make or break deals or important decisions in life. E.g. Negotiating with a business partner who is wealthy like Warren Buffet.

Machiavellian personality: In simple lay man terms, it is to be ruthless to the enemies, yet kind to those who aid you. In order to maintain a position of power in areas such as the workplace or in parliament, one has to look powerful and fearful to rivals(e.g. by hiring Pinkertons/coercing others using intimidation) whilst he needing to look positive and kind in front of others such as his employees and agents in order to gain loyal allies. Hence, this "Machiavellian" personality is required in day to day basis at the workplace in order to maintain the façade that the company has no weakness.
