Hi! I am Leo Xavier G. Taboada. I'm 21 years old and I lived in Maa, Davao City. I love working out, playing sports, socializing, and singing. One interesting fact about me is that I know how to inject syringes even though I'm not a nursing nor a medtech student. Filipino pop culture is an energetic and varied fusion of influences, melding traditional Filipino elements with contemporary trends. The music scene is especially intriguing, ranging from the legendary OPM (Original Pilipino Music) icons such as Eraserheads and Rivermaya to more recent sensations like Sarah Geronimo and Ben&Ben, whose music captivates audiences locally and abroad.

In the realm of cinema, the Philippines boasts a diverse film history, spanning from timeless works by directors such as Lino Brocka and Ishmael Bernal to recent hits like "Heneral Luna" and "Kita Kita," which have gained international acclaim. Filipino TV dramas, or teleseryes, also hold a special spot in pop culture, with beloved series like "Pangako Sa'Yo" and "Ang Probinsyano" winning the hearts of viewers across different generations.

Additionally, food plays a significant role in Filipino pop culture, with dishes like adobo, sinigang, and lechon becoming popular worldwide. The increasing prominence of Filipino cuisine on the global culinary stage is thrilling to observe, with chefs such as Margarita Fores and Claude Tayag elevating Filipino food to international recognition.

An element of Philippine pop culture that I would highlight on my Padlet is the lively realm of Filipino martial arts, particularly Eskrima, also known as Arnis or Kali. This native martial art boasts a deep history entrenched in Filipino traditions, focusing on combat with weapons such as sticks, knives, and other bladed tools. I'd compile videos featuring adept Eskrima practitioners demonstrating their skills, alongside explanations of the art's core tenets and its importance in Filipino culture and heritage. Audiences would gain a glimpse into the seamless movements, intricate footwork, and practical applications of Eskrima, recognizing its significance not only as a martial art but also as a cultural legacy that continues to develop and flourish in contemporary times.

The chosen Contemporary Philippine Pop Culture of Filipino street art can be examined via the lens of Semiotics, which is the study of signs and symbols and their interpretations. In this setting, Filipino street art is an effective tool for social transformation and cultural expression. Artists frequently employ symbols and imagery to convey statements concerning social issues, cultural identity, and political commentary. Murals depicting historical characters or indigenous symbols, for example, can be used in urban places to reclaim and preserve Filipino heritage. These works serve as visible symbols of resistance and empowerment, questioning dominant narratives and supporting alternate viewpoints.

The examination of Filipino street art through the lens of Semiotics, the study of signs and symbols and their meanings, exposes its power as a force for social transformation and cultural expression. Artists use symbols and pictures to communicate about social issues, cultural identity, and political commentary. Murals featuring historical personalities or indigenous symbols, for example, might help to recover and protect Filipino history in urban areas. These works serve as visible symbols of resistance and empowerment, questioning popular narratives and pushing for alternative perspectives. Through the lens of semiotic analysis, we can understand how these artworks express messages that resonate with audiences, sparking debate and prompting reflection on issues such as poverty, human rights, and environmental protection.
Furthermore, the Uses and Gratifications Theory sheds light on how Filipino street art promotes change by fulfilling the many needs and aspirations of its audience. Viewers deliberately seek out these pieces of art not only for their visual appeal, but also for social interaction, cultural identity affirmation, and intellectual stimulation. The interactive element of street art, which allows spectators to interact with the art in public places, develops a sense of belonging and connection among individuals. This participation with street art fosters a common cultural experience and a sense of empowerment among Filipinos. Furthermore, the diverse themes depicted in street art, ranging from historical histories to contemporary challenges, provide spectators with an opportunity for critical thought and contemplation.
