Element 34 is all about holding students responsible for their choices. If they don't follow the rules, they get a consequence. However, rather than just giving the student a consequence, teachers must communicate with parents.

Time-outs are used when a student is overcome with emotion, or needs some space. A teacher should have a designated area for the child to go to cool down and refocus. During this time, the student should complete a reflection activity that includes a written plan of what should be done differently. Once the student has reflected, relaxed, and calmed down, they may return to the class activity.

~Use Google Drive or Evernote to create templates for the reflection activity.
~Use calming music at the reflection station to help students calm down. Calm.com has nature scenes along with calming sounds or music. It also comes with a timer that can be used, if needed.

This strategy uses the power of positive peer pressure. The class, or group, will all find success or consequences based on each other's behavior. Since students are being held accountable for the actions of others, this can lead to them regulating each other's behaviors themselves. Students can be randomly placed into groups using a team generator. Then, points can be awarded to those groups that have positive behavior and strong contributions to the group.

~Team Maker or other random group generator can be used to pick groups.
~IWB software can be used to track team points.
~Class Dojo can also be used to keep track of points, both for individuals and for groups.
~Post class rules, procedures, and consequences on your class website, and have students ask questions or respond to scenarios about those procedures.

In this strategy, the teacher must keep open, regular communication with the parents of individual students. If there is unity between school and home, all parties benefit. The communication that takes place between home and school can take many different forms: phone calls, in-person conferences, or written notes.

~Class Dojo can be used to track positive or negative behavior points. It also allows parents and teachers to communicate through its messaging feature.
~Email can also be used to communicate written notes to parents.
~Apps such as Remind allow teachers to text parents, as a group or individually, without having to give parents their phone number.
