Similarity: Caused death and damage

One similarity is how both caused mass amounts of death and destruction. In Dresden, the firebombs were created specifically to damage cities. The bombs sent raging fires that burned the city and people. Nearly 25,000 people were killed by this attack. The atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki also caused lots of damage. The bombs dropped had devastating affects on the cities themselves and people. Because they were atomic, they released radiation which ended up killing many first-hand, and creating long term health problems for the Japanese. 129,000-246,000 are estimated to have been killed from these raids. This similarity occurs because both bombing were meant to inflict large scale damage in order to claim victory in WW11.

Difference: Atomic v. Fire bombs

A difference between the two bombs is the specific kind of each. The bombs dropped in Dresden were called firebombs, which were used to create fires that would spread across a city and cause destruction. The Allied powers claim they wanted to destroy a place focused on war productions. On the other hand, the first, and only, atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Manhattan project was the secret research that was done to try and create the bomb. The atomic bomb was used on Japan specifically and not Germany, because the US believed that without it, war would have continued and even more lives would have been lost than in the bombs themselves. This difference occurs because the need of a atomic bomb was greater for Japan. The war in Europe was already slowly ending for Germany, while in the Pacific, Japan was still fighting harder. The United States wanted to save lives in the long run, and end the war faster.

Similarity: Caused Surrender

Another similarity is the final outcome of each, surrender. As the war in the Pacific became more taxing on America, we decided drastic measures needed to be taken in order to finish the war. Japan finally surrendered the war on August 15th, a few days after the bombs hit. The bombing of Dresden, Germany, in part, lead to Germany's surrender. Germany officially surrendered to the Allies on May 7th, 1945. Germany had already been under get stress of the war, trying to fight off the United States and the Soviet Union. The bombings were just one more thing that knocked Germany down. This similarity occurs because both the firebombs and the atomic bombs were so devastating for Germany and Japan, who were both already slowly losing the war. The bombs created a more negative public opinion and showed that each country was weakening in the war, causing them to eventually surrender.
