"And every night, about midnight, I turned the latch of his door and opened it...I put in a dark lantern, so that no light shone out, and then thrust in my head...I undid the lantern cautiously so that a single thin ray fell upon the culture eye. This I did for seven long nights."
This quote shows that type of person the madman is. The madman has so much hatred towards the old man the for seven nights he stalk the old man. The reason for the madman to stalk the old man is look at his eye that the madman hates.

"I loved the old man...I think it was his eye!...Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so, I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, thus rid myself of the eye forever."
This quote shows one of his many thoughts that the madman had. The madman is saying that he loved the old man. He had no problem with him with the exception of his eye. The madman hated the old man's eye. As he states his blood runs cold. The only way the madman could stop hating on the old man's eye is killing him.

One effect is on the officers. The madman made sure to not act suspicious after he committed murder. He used his confidence to make the officer believe whatever he was saying.
"I took my visitors all over the house...I led them, at length, to his chamber. I showed them his treasures, secure, undisturbed. In the enthusiasm of my confidence, I brought chairs into the room..."
Another effect was on the neighbor. The neighbor was getting suspicious of what was happening at the old man's house. The neighbor heard a noise and decide to call the officers.
"There entered three men, officers of the police. A shriek had been heard by a neighbor during the night, suspicious if foul play had been aroused, and the officers had been deputed to search the premises."

An action that the madman did was to dismember the old man's body after he had killed him. The madman did this to make sure that he hid the body well.
"If you still think me mad, you will think so no longer when I described the wise precaution I took for the concealment of the body. First I dismembered the corpse. I cut off the head, and the arms, and the legs."
Another action the madman did was to confess to the officers that he had killed the old man. This was because he kept hearing the beating heart of the dead old man.
"They heard! They suspected! They knew! They were making a mockery of my horror! I felt that I must scream or die! And now, again! Hark! Louder! Louder! Louder! 'Villains' I shrieked, 'dissemble no more! I admit the deed! Tear up the planks! Here, here! It is the beating of his hideous heart!'"

The symbol of the story is the old man's beating heart because this is what causes the madman to confess. While the madman was with the officers he kept hearing his beating heart. It got really loud in his head so the guilt was building up. So the madman confessed and showed the dead body of the old man to the officers.
