The Black Lives Matter movement and the era of #MeToo brought about a cultural movement from inequality apathy to action for justice. Whereas many unaffected by discrimination had been complacent with gender and racial injustices, these cultural catalysts called on allies and created a louder demand for justice in the public sphere. This cultural evolution is reflected in the Bachelor franchise through the brand’s addition of spinoff show The Bachelorette, the shows more recent emphasis on diversity, and the strategic removal of host Chris Harison. This shift is highly nuanced and begs the question: with its deeply problematic history and messaging, is the Bachelor franchise redeemable?
