Language competence indeed is the key for every communication. If we don't feel confident speaking a language, there is no way we will be confident and successful in other aspects of our lives. Our goal is to prepare our students for the life in the hectic 21st century and to teach them global skills in order to prepare them for their future jobs and lives in general. Like it or not, we live in a globalized world. It cannot be denied that English has been adopted as the default common language among different countries, even if no native english speaker is present.

Our students have been born almost with wireless internet connection, and they use it (with more or less proficiency) when interacting with friends abroad.

If we look at the diagramme which has appeared at the end of the video, we could see that both aspects, Multilingualism and Cultural diversity, have to be/become paralell to each other. The diagram reminds me an up and down swing, however, I belive these words mean the same and teachers tend to „equal” them.

I suppose both aspects exist and develop simultaneously: multilingualism increases our understanding of students’/people’s cultural diversity and cultural diversity, in its turn, contributes multilingualism’s developmnent.

If a teacher has children/pupils/students from different countries, he/she is supposed to broaden his/her mind in order to be supportive and helpful for a foreign student. A language is a tool which helps to start the communication even if we need to use gestures, pictures to start the communication with a foreign student.

So,for me language awareness becomes a provider to multilingualism and cultural diversity.

I quickly realized however that each of us of various backgrounds not only had a different language but also different ways of communicating. To me language competence is language confidence which is essential for opening up to more and more languages and cultures. The teacher can perform a vital role in the classroom as a model of a global citizen mediating across the languages of the learners.
What I find really challenging is inspiring students to multilingualism and exploring the benefits of diversity for learning for life.

Since language awareness deals with being sensitive to how one's native and non-native language(s) affects a student's education and linguistic development, the connection with language competency is clear since it involves languages as a tool for use in a plethora of aspects within life beyond a classroom. Not only do students who are dual or multilingual know how to communicate in languages other than their mother tongue, but they acquire more experiences and opportunities to learn about other cultures and subcultures that use another language they are either still learning or are fluent with.

Being part of a multilingual world is the new way of life. It is very rare nowadays that people stick to their own country and don't have contact with other countries' habits and cultures. Language awarness in my opinion is connected with communicative competence. Languages are necessary to communicate, but it is not only a language thing. The capacity to communicate goes farther more than languages.
Who doesn't know someone whose communication in his own language is not good enough becouse of a lack of different communicative skills development such as orgainicing a text properly, using poor vocabulary or even having a lack of appropriate body expression to help the speaking?

It is not only a problem in oral language, but also in writing language. Sometimes a person who is using a second language is more communicative because even they write simple sentences, the sentences are grammatically correct and express what they really want to.

I agree, on the one hand with Daniela, that language competence is an important tool for communication in multilingual societies and in the working environment as it facilitates communication and understanding. But the last two: communication and understanding need other equally important skills like emotional intelligence, social skills, life skills etc. So we can say that the level of linguistic competence can open the door to better communication if the other competences I mentioned are also present.

I think that language awareness can be made bloomed before the development of language competence. From early childhood, when children learn to express themselves in their mother tongue language, parents and educators can help them to be aware of the importance of choosing the right word in the right context, for example. Or they can play with the nuances of the language with games and dramatisation. I think, for examples, of all the funny situations that come from the difference between CASA and CASSA, in italian, or at the wonderful misunderstandings that there are in Winnie Pooh, when the characters loose Christopher Robin at SKULL, and he was just at SCHOOL.
If children are trained to reflect about the language gears, they will be more confident at school and readier to open their minds in the comparison between their language/culture and all the others.

Since our classrooms are filled with speakers of different languages we need to make our students conscious about the opportunities to develop cultural awareness through communicative interactions with other non Spanish speakers. Although using their mother tongue language our students are aware of their linguistic diversity and their cultural difference, by developing language competence and awareness they can connect to structural and sociolinguistic aspects of their own language and other languages, and this is really important in multilingual societies. Developing a critical Language Awareness teachers would become social activists so that all students are educated equitably and democratically and they can grow up as citizens of the world.

I think language competence and language awareness go hand in hand pretty well, because if you are aware of the inner mechanisms that put that language into movement you somehow develop your language competencies. Also, being able to speak several languages may help you not only improve your well rounded education, but also broaden your perspectives, your opportunities and expose you to different cultures and ways of thinking.
