Litter is Killing the Earth

Have you ever seen a plastic bag on the road? Well, if that bag stayed there for a while, it’s going to harm many animals, and cause a lot of trouble, such as pollute the water for the animals that drink the water it has been in, or trap a small animal inside it, and worst of all, it won’t go away for many centuries to come, causing more and more pollution. I’ve seen many plastic-made things all over the roads, the grass, and even the water! Litter is causing tons of pollution and should be taken more seriously. Pollution is making animals and plants sick, air pollution is causing acid rain, and water is unhealthy for animals and drinking. We should all clean up, recycle and stop the harm of the Earth.

Pollution makes animals and plants sick, as NOAA says, “Spilled oil can harm living things because its chemical constituents are poisonous. This can affect organisms both from internal exposure to oil through ingestion or inhalation and from external exposure through skin and eye irritation. Oil can also smother some small species of fish or invertebrates and coat feathers and fur, reducing birds' and mammals' ability to maintain their body temperatures. The oil harms the environment not just because of itself, but also because of the operations we have to do to cleanup.” This means that all the oil you produce, the toxic materials being made, all the constant gasoline, and all the trees being cut makes animals sick, homeless, and makes the cubs orphans!, So, if you see anything that could make animals sick, such as, oil, plastic, or anything lying around that could cause damage, do something about it!

Air pollution is causing acid rain and smog because, as what KidzSearch and Ducksters, say, “Air pollution has been shown to have a bad impact on forests, freshwater and soil. It kills insect and aquatic life-forms as well as causes damage to buildings and having impacts on human health. Acid rain poisons rivers and lakes. Fish and other animals cannot live in acid water. It is also bad for buildings as the acid damages calcium carbonate stone. The acid makes it erode away. Many of the world's oldest and most famous buildings and monuments are in danger of breaking down because of acid rain. The Mississippi River carries around 1.5 million tons of pollution into the Gulf of Mexico each year, spreading the oil to the Atlantic. Sewage can also cause major problems in rivers. Bacteria in the water will use oxygen to break down the sewage. If there is too much sewage, the bacteria could use up so much oxygen that there won't be enough left for the fish, disturbing the entire food chain, thus endangering many, many, animals.” That’s saying that the smoke being produced from factories, and the cars that emit too much pollution, they all cause smog. If any creature breathes that air, it would be equivalent to smoking one cigarette. The lungs can’t handle that and then the animal dies. The next time, try not to use as much gas or oil, and you’ll help out your planet.

Clean water is becoming dirty and unhealthy for all living things. “Water pollution kills. In fact, it caused 1.8 million deaths in 2015, according to a study published in The Lancet. Contaminated water can also make you ill. Every year, unsafe water sickens about 1 billion people. And low-income communities are disproportionately at risk because their homes are often closest to the most polluting industries. Waterborne pathogens, in the form of disease-causing bacteria and viruses from human and animal waste, are a major cause of illness from contaminated drinking water. Diseases spread by unsafe water include cholera, giardia, and typhoid. Even in wealthy nations, accidental or illegal releases from sewage treatment facilities, as well as runoff from farms and urban areas, contribute harmful pathogens to waterways. Thousands of people across the United States are sickened every year by Legionnaires’ disease.” According to NRDC. Every time you, or anyone else pour a soda or any artificial liquids into the water, the plastic, oil, the boats that burn oil. and lead that leak into the rivers and then into the ocean causes sea creatures to be sick, and then whatever eats them also gets sick, spreading the sickness to all creatures. Think about your planet before doing something that might pollute the water, it would kill hundreds of animals. The clean water is your responsibility, the clean water is controlled by humans, so keep it clean!

In conclusion, litter is causing pollution and should be taken more seriously. Pollution is making animals and plants sick, air pollution is causing acid rain, and clean water is becoming dirty water for animals to drink. To help, we can pick up any garbage that we see, use less gasoline to help keep the air clean, and stop using water pollutants. If you see that plastic bag, or someone kept their car running on, or even if you see harmful things in the water, remember to clean it up, or stop it because all life, and the earth will benefit from what you did. We can all do our parts in the world, so the not just us, but the Earth and the animals stays clean and healthy.

                             Animal Testing
              By:Dhyana Patel

Are you against animal testing? I am, and I think animal testing should be banned or be taken more seriously. There has been several deaths because of animal testing. Animal testing is taken like animals are toys . Experiments like animal testing should not be used on animals. This is just a 2 things that prove how animal testing is terrible. The solution to this is that labs should test on something non-living before on animals.
Let’s start of by the several deaths that animal testing has caused. Search.kidzsearch.com states that, “We estimate that approximately 100,000-200,000 animals suffer and die just for cosmetics every year around the world.” This just shows how many animals are dying and decreasing in the number amount that animal were before and after the number of deaths. Dosomething.org also says that “Over 100 million animals are burned, crippled, poisoned, and abused in US labs every year” proving that they are not only dying, but they are being forced to take the test. Deaths are also caused by poisoning and being abused in the labs that promote animal testing. From my point-of-view, I love animals and want to stop them from going extinct. Do you have a pet at home? Naturally, you love your pet, but how would you feel if your pet was one of the thousands of animals that was getting tested on and dying. How would you feel if your pet got blind or lost his/her hearing? How would you feel for those other 100,000-200,000 other lives that were taken because of testing? What would you do without a furball following you around, waiting for you to come back from school, or work?
Animals should not be the ones suffering and getting tested on. Many of these experiments cause pain to the animals involved or reduce their quality of life in other ways.If it is morally wrong to cause animals to suffer then experimenting on animals produces serious moral problems. “Animal experiments are widely used to develop new medicines and to test the safety of other products. The BBC website writes. It also says that, “They also agree that it's wrong to use animals if alternative testing methods would produce equally valid results.”
Animals weren't meant to die because of getting products tested on them that was dangerous and they surely were not made for “Animal Testing.” Now you have a choice to ban this cruel thing itself or just make stricter laws for this extremely cruel thing . It is in our hands, let’s save these animals lives from becoming extinct.

Smoking is and its dangers bad for people and bad for the environment
     By: Farhan Peer

The American Lung Association, “Every year in the U.S., more than 480,000 people die from tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke, making it the leading cause of preventable death in this country.” The ALA is saying that out of 305.6 million people in the USA, 480,000 are dead dying due to smoking. Due to have me hating when people smoke, I believe that smoking should be taken seriously and that smoking is bad for people and bad for the environment because it causes health issues to other people, it cause health issues to you, and it causes pollution. So, let’s put a stop to smoking around the world!!!!
First, smoking is bad others health. Smoking causes short breath, bad wheezing problems, and in bad circumstances, you will get lung cancer. From Smokefree.gov ‘Secondhand Smoke’ says, “The main way smoking hurts non-smokers is through secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke is the combination of smoke that comes from a cigarette and smoke breathed out by a smoker. When a non-smoker is around someone smoking, they breathe in secondhand smoke”. Smokefree.gov is saying that second-hand smoke hurts other people the most. When they inhale the smoke, and it stays in their body for a long time, it can do serious damage. It can give lung cancer for a person who didn’t even smoke, it can give a higher chance of early death by a heart attack, or it could just give you a shortness of breath or wheezing. It can be even more serious for asthma patients. As you can see, there are some many health risks for others. But that’s not all, Smokefree.gov also says, “Smoking affects the people in your life in other ways, beyond their health. When you smoke, you may miss out on… spending time with family and friends, having more money to spend on the people you love, setting a good example for your children, children who are raised by smokers are more likely to become smokers themselves.” In summary, Smokefree.gov is saying that smoking affects others in many emotional ways rather than health issues. So, overall, smoking is bad for others and you should never smoke unless you want to get someone bad health issues when they didn’t even smoke.
Next, smoking is bad for the environment because it causes pollution. From CNN ‘Study reveals high environmental cost of tobacco’
says, "We calculate that two-thirds of every cigarette ends up as litter,". This is bad because roughly 1.1 billion people and if two-thirds end up as liter, that means, 733, 333, 123.3 cigarettes are lying all over the world. In my opinion, that is a lot of cigarettes!! Smoking also affects the farming industries. Kidshealth.org says, "Tobacco also takes away a lot of nutrients from the soil and requires massive amounts of fertilizer, a process that leads to degradation of the land and desertification, with negative consequences for biodiversity and wildlife," Peruga said. Kidshealth.org is saying that tobacco takes a lot of nutrients from the soil which is horrible for the plants around it. Also, tobacco takes a mass amount of fertilizer. Fertilizer takes a lot of money. In all, even with huge increases in prices for wheat, corn and soybeans, which average about $300 per acre, nothing makes more money than $1,500-per-acre tobacco. Finally, truthinative.org says, “Data from the Ocean Conservancy shows that 1,030,640 cigarette butts were removed from U.S. beaches and inland waterways as part of the annual International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) in 2016. This represents about 24 percent of the total debris of items collected and, by far, the most prevalent item found.”Truthinative.org is saying that cigarette butts is the most piece of litter in an area in 2016. This is bad because that in any animal swallows one of the butts, they will die by toxic chemicals stuck in their bodies. This means, that 1,030,640 animals could have died due to the toxic cigarettes. Also, the chemicals of the cigarette butts could end up in our drinking water, and too much of it could be flatel. In the end, tobacco and cigarettes cause pollution, use up a lot of money, and is bad for other plants. This is and other reason why you shouldn’t smoke.
Finally, smoking is bad for your health. You could get lung cancer, and even have blindness if you smoke too much. Lung cancer is a type of cancer that affects your lungs. Throwing up blood, chest pain, and shortness of breath are all symptoms of lung cancer. This is one of the major ways smoking affects its followers. For example, Lung.org says, “Smoking doesn't do your peepers any good. Smoking increases your risk of age-related macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in adults over the age of 65.” As I said, Lung.org is saying that smoking causes blindness. Imagine being blind, you can’t see a thing, afraid and really cautious, and highly dangerous. Next, lung.org says, “Smoking contributes to type 2 diabetes and increases the risk of complications from the disease— including poor blood flow to legs and feet. This can lead to infection and result in the need to amputate a limb. Yep–you could lose your foot or leg!”. Lung.org is saying that when you smoke, you can lose a leg due to the disease, diabetes. Without one leg or one finger, how
could you walk or pick up and object ever again!!. If you want to play a sport, how would you do that? These reasons are just a small glimpse of the bad things smoking could do to you.
Over all, smoking is bad for people, and bad for the environment. Now you know why you shouldn’t smoke. You shouldn’t smoke because it is bad for health, it is bad for the environment, and it is bad for others. You could quit smoking, or if you are too addicted, you could get a shot that makes you stop. The American Lung Association says, “Every year in the U.S., more than 480,000 people die from tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke, making it the leading cause of preventable death in this country.” If nobody smokes, none of the problems that are stated, or due to smoking, will happen. Together, let's make smoking wander in history, instead of letting it catch more victims in the future.

       Littering
  By Ananya Cheruku

“We are living on this planet as if we had another one to go to” said by Jerri Swearingen. This shows how badly people treat the environment. Have you ever been taking a walk and wondered where the trash goes if you throw on the sidewalk? Well, it can go in the ocean and stay there or it can wash up on shores and confuse animals into thinking it’s food and eat it. Littering should be taken more seriously. Littering is bad for the people, the animals, and the environment. You may not realize how harmful garbage can be to the environment and the animals.

Animals dying is a result of littering because animals eat garbage and it might be something dangerous that could hurt or even kill the animal. In the article How Litter Affects Wildlife, it states that “Many marine animals confuse plastic bags, balloons, bait packets, lolly wrappers and rubber with prey and eat them.Baleen whales such as blue whales, and humpbacks take big gulps of water to feed on krill that they filter through their baleen, and accidentally swallow plastic when feeding. The plastic stays in their gut and stops them digesting their food, leading to a slow death” This shows how bad things can get if you don’t think about your actions. Animals are actually dying out there and were not really doing much about it. Imagine that a fish or dolphin swimming around and minding its business and suddenly its gets stuck in an old fishing line it can restrict their movement and lead to starvation, infection, amputation and drowning. Now do you realize how badly littering impacts the animal kingdom?

Water pollution is a result of littering because garbage gets in the water and it will kill everything in there. You probably don’t realize how much littering contributes to unsafe and unhealthy water for animals and humans. In another article called Environmental Pollution centers, it states that “ water pollution may consist of chemicals introduced into the water bodies as a result of various human activities. Any amount of those chemicals pollutes the water, regardless of the harm they may pose to the environment.
Nitrates and Phosphates in water are only beneficial to algae and harmful microorganisms and are poisonous to aquatic life”. This shows that a lot of organisms are dying because people don’t care enough about the environment. There are coral reefs dying in the water and we aren’t doing enough about it. In the same website i used before it said “Radioactive waste that contains highly toxic materials such as Uranium, Thorium, and Radon. This waste is a major water pollutant resulted from mining activities, power plants or natural sources” If you don’t know, Uranium, Thorium, and Radon aren’t very safe elements and are harmful for organisms and the coral in the ocean. There are also more dangerous chemicals that are thrown into the water and kill thousands of animals and other living things in the water. As you can see the environment really is dying, so if you care about the environment you’ll try and do something about it.

This shows how bad littering is. Littering should be taken more seriously. Water pollution is a result of littering and animals dying is also a result of littering. You can help the environment and animals by cleaning up heavily littered places and stop littering in general. “We are living on this planet as if we had another one to go to” said by Jerri Swearingen. Littering is bad for the environment, the animals, and the people. So next time you have a candy wrapper, throw it in the garbage, please.

Habitat loss By: Parnika As WWF says “Habitat loss is probably the greatest threat to the variety of life on this planet today.” This simple quote tells how bad habitat loss is, and I think we should stop habitat loss. I love animals and I don’t want them to become extinct. Animal’s have nowhere to live and they are dying, and it’s bad for the environment. If people don’t do something about habitat loss, I will.Animal’s have nowhere to live and they are dying. When people take over their habitats they have nowhere to live. For example WWF says “Habitat loss is also identified as a main threat to 8of all species described in the IUCN's Red List (those species officially classified as "Threatened" and "Endangered"). Poverty, consumption and land-use patterns contribute to the degradation of marine habitats and to the destruction of the species that rely on them to survive.” This means that alot of the animals that are endangered are dying, also habitat doesn only affect land it affects sea life. If habaitat loss does not stop then our animals will become extinct. This is only one of the many reasons of why habitat loss is bad. Animals are already endangered but if habitat loss continues more animals will die.It bad for the environment. Trees give us oxygen, and we need oxygen to survive. WWF also states that “Around half of the world's original forests have disappeared, and they are still being removed at a rate 10x higher than any possible level of regrowth. Forest loss and degradation is mostly caused by the expansion of agricultural land, intensive harvesting of timber, wood for fuel and other forest products, as well as overgrazing.” This show that most land animals live in the forest and when we cut our trees they don’t have a home. Cutting down trees is bad for us and animals. If we want to survive we need need to save our trees and environment. As you can see habitat loss kills our animals and ruins our envirment. Animals are losing their habitats and they are dying, and its bad for the environment. “Habitat loss is probably the greatest threat to the variety of life on this planet today.” WWF says. There needs to be strickter laws about habitat loss. Animals have feelings just like us, they don’t want to lose their homes, and neither do we.

Water Pollution By: Kayla Bodner Water pollution causes trash and dirty water. Do you like sea animals? If you do then, you should help stop Water Pollution. Rally For Rivers said, “Save water to save, Millions of lives.” Which means that, we need to water by being more careful and to make sure you throw out your trash so it does not create Water Pollution. to save millions of animals and plants lives. If we don’t, we would cause Trash and Dirty Water and also Water Pollution affects plants and living so Water Pollution will affect our future live. In the article Everything You Need to Know, Melissa Denchak states, “Thousands have lived without love, not one without water. Yet while we all know water is crucial for life, we trash it anyway.” This means that you should use less plastic so it doesn't harm animals and does not create dirty water. Dirty Water also will affect us and animals just by Water Pollution. Pollution effects plants and living things. In the article Plastic Pollution, Allyson Shaw states, “A sea turtle swims through the water and spots a white blob floating near the surface. “Yum!” it thinks. “A jellyfish!” Chasing after its dinner, the turtle swallows the item. But the floating blob isn’t a jelly—it’s a plastic bag that could make the sea turtle sick. This sea creature isn’t alone: Over 700 species of marine animals have been reported to have eaten or been entangled in plastic. Scientists think that the amount of plastic in the ocean might triple by 2050—and that would mean seriously bad news for the ocean and the creatures that live there. But by understanding the issue and taking action, you can help stop that from happening.” This proves that we need to be more careful about where we put our trash so it doesn't end up in oceans because this turtle swallowed a plastic bag thinking it was a jellyfish and the jellyfish could of gotten sick by swallowing the plastic bag. We could kill every animal on Earth if we don’t stop Water Pollution. Now do you understand why we need to help stop Water Pollution? If not, here is another reason why we need to help Water Pollution. If pollution breaks a home of a animal, the animal will have no home and if homes keep getting destroyed because of pollution the oceans will be full of pollution not wild life. That's also why we need to stop Water Pollution. Water Pollution is such an important thing. Be part of the solution, Not the pollution!

World Hunger by Srihita;) 1 out of 7 people are hungry every day. This is showing that so many people are hungry everyday. For example, out of a class of 21 kids, 3 kids would be hungry every day. This is why we should try to stop Hunger. Not being able to eat food can bring deadly diseases and hunger among children can lead to a bad future. This is why we should care more about hunger.	One of my supporting reasons is that not eating can bring deadly diseases. In the article, Hunger in Africa, it states “According to UN data, 165 million children worldwide are too small for their age, or stunted, due to chronic malnutrition. Three quarters of these children live in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. In sub-Saharan Africa, 40% of children are affected; in South Asia, 39%.3.2 million children under the age of 5 die each year in sub-Saharan Africa - that's about half of the world's deaths in this age group. Worldwide, nearly every second death in children under the age of five is due to malnutrition. As this weakens the immune system, diseases such as pneumonia, malaria or diarrhea often lead to death. The sub-Saharan child mortality rate is one of the highest in the world, with one in nine children dying before the age of 5. In Sierra Leone, one in every six children dies before the age of 5. Especially young children die in Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo”. This proves that not being able to eat can lead to sickness and dieing. According to the Partnership to Help Fight Chronic Disease states that “Processed food is inexpensive, filling and widely available. Do, while low-income Americans typically can get something to eat, they may not get enough nutrients from fresh fruits, vegetables and other foods they need to remain healthy. That lack of nutrients can often lead to chronic disease, an overlooked by product of hunger and food insecurity in America. Chronic diseases are the leading cause of death, disability and rising healthcare costs in the United States, and 45% of Americans have at least one chronic condition”. This shows that even buying bad food or not eating can bring death and disabilities. So,s you can see, so many deadly diseases and even death can come from Hunger. Another supporting reason is that hunger amongst children can lead to a bad future. “Hungry children are sick more often, and more likely to have to be hospitalized (the costs of which are passed along to the business community as insurance and tax burdens); • Hungry children suffer growth impairment that precludes their reaching their full physical potential, • Hungry children incur developmental impairments that limit their physical, intellectual and emotional development states the article Child food insecurity: the economic impact on our nation. Teachers are on the front lines in the war against childhood hunger. They spend hours with kids daily and are first hand witnesses to children's lives. And U.S. teachers are worried. Last year, Share Our Strength surveyed more than 1,000 K–8 public school teachers about hunger in their classrooms. Their answers were striking. Overwhelmingly, teachers across the United States—from urban, suburban, and rural districts—told us childhood hunger remains a serious obstacle to learning.A majority of the teachers we surveyed see students coming to school hungry. More than half said "a lot" or "most" of their students relied on school meals as their primary source of nutrition. Three of five said they had students in their current classrooms who regularly came to school without getting enough to eat at home (Share Our Strength, 2012).One teacher we talked to said, "I've had students come to school in the morning with the [school] lunch they ate the previous day having been their most recent meal." A Midwestern teacher noted, "The saddest are the children who cry when we get out early for a snow day because they won't get lunch" . Kids with empty bellies find it hard to focus. They concentrate more on making it to lunch than on math or reading lessons. Test scores plummet (one reason schools feed kids a healthy breakfast on standardized test days). Hungry students can exhibit behavior problems; they may become irritable or rowdy or get lethargic. Some miss class to go to the school nurse, complaining of stomach aches and headaches. One teacher explained her wake-up call: I often see children in my classroom who seem sleepy and unfocused. I usually asked them, "What time did you go to bed last night?" One day, I realized many of these kids were hungry, not tired. Now I ask, "What time did you last eat something?" stated ASCD.	Now you can see that, this is why we should try to stop hunger. Also, I have proof that not being able to eat food can bring deadly diseases and Hunger amongst children can lead to a bad future. We should be able to stop this by donating money even a dollar could save someone's life. 1 out of 7 people are hungry every day. You wouldn’t want to eat bad food, so why would the rest of the world want to?

Grace D. LaMantia

“More than 40% of low-income schools don't get a fair share of state and local funds” the Department of Education Research finds. This quote explains how ⅖ of schools with barely any income don’t get a good enough amount of state and local funds. I think education should be looked at deeper into all aspects. This is because of low funding for schools and homeless students aren’t getting job opportunities. Honestly, I can sadly relate to this. From first grade to fourth I barely learned anything in math. So I think schools and their townships are supposed to go to their best standards, and here’s why.

My first reason as to why education should reinforced in all aspects is because of low funding for schools. One piece of evidence comes from the US Department of Education, which states that “More Than 40% of Low-Income Schools Don't Get a Fair Share of State and Local Funds”. The US Department of Education’s secretary, Arne Duncan, also states “Educators across the country understand that low-income students need extra support and resources to succeed, but in far too many places policies for assigning teachers and allocating resources are perpetuating the problem rather than solving it”. After looking up what perpetuating means, I concluded that this quote is claiming that low-income students need more resources to at least graduate. That same report also claims “Most States Have Cut School Funding, and Some Continue Cutting” and “Most states provide less support per student for elementary and secondary schools — in some cases, much less — than before the Great Recession, our survey of state budget documents over the last three months finds. Worse, some states are still cutting eight years after the recession took hold.” This informs us that some states are lowering the funding for schools, and that after the Great Recession, a survey of state budget documents that covers three months says that states are lowering the school’s budget. In conclusion, this proves that the funding that the states provide is lowering and that schools need more so their students can learn at their skill level.

My second reason is that homeless students aren’t getting job opportunities. One piece of evidence comes from the report by the US Department of Labor, which states the “highest median weekly earnings ($1,730) and lowest unemployment rate (1.5 percent) in 2015 of all groups shown. That’s more than triple the earnings ($493) and less than one-fifth the unemployment rate (8.0 percent) of workers with less than a high school diploma.” This is stating that people who have less than a high school diploma in 2015 has three times the highest amount of income today, and that people who have less than a high school diploma in 2015 have less than one fifth of the unemployment rate that we have now. My last piece of evidence is that the Indiana Business Review states “Higher levels of education increase the chance an unemployed person will emerge with a comparable wage and reduce the time required to find new employment.” What this is basically saying is that people who have had better education and are currently unemployed have a better chance of finding a new job than someone with less education. What are your thoughts about homeless students and job opportunities now?

To add to all of my evidence, I interviewed some people for their opinions.

“What are your opinions on the subject of low-quality schooling?”

“It’s trash,” -Nishita Katare

“Horrible,” -Varsha Kolachina

“It sounds like a nightmare” -Srihita Nuthalapati

“How do you feel about students with a chance in a better job, but can’t because their schools didn’t teach them the appropriate subjects to their level?”

““That’s messed up, and it’s sad for the children and stuff” -Nishita Katare

*thumbs down* -Varsha Kolachina

“It’s gross” -Srihita Nuthalapati

I hope you can see that education should be looked at deeper into all aspects because of low-funding and homeless students not getting job opportunities. Right now you’re probably thinking This can probably be solved easily, and it can. Say “hello” to the Title I program. According to the US Department of Education “The Title I program is designed to provide extra resources to high-poverty schools to help them meet the greater challenges of educating at-risk students.” I hope that this program will help stabilize the differences between the higher quality and the lower quality foundations. “More than 40% of low-income schools don't get a fair share of state and local funds”, so shouldn’t we do something about it?

Pollution and It's Effects

Nishita Katare

As 1911-2004 president Ronald Reagan states, “Preservation of our environment is not a liberal or conservative challenge, it’s common sense.”. I could not have said it better myself. We, as humans who rely on the Earth to survive, should know better than to pollute the planet. I love nature, and how simply beautiful it can be, so I believe that we need to stop pollution to save our planet. Global warming has been working away at the Earth for a while now, and humans and animals are getting sick and even dying because of it. We need to take responsibility for our actions and at least try to reverse the effects pollution has had on our planet.

We need to stop polluting our planet because it causes global warming. “Climate change has had a negative effect on our planet over the years, and things are getting worse by the minute” says NASA. Literally, every minute, factories and cars are polluting the air and contributing to global warming. The Union of Concerned Scientists informs us that “Every one of the past 40 years has been warmer than the 20th century average. 2016 was the hottest year on record. The 12 warmest years on record have all occurred since 1998.”. The years are only getting hotter because of all the carbon dioxide we are releasing into the atmosphere. We have to stop soon, or there will be serious consequences. “Throughout its long history, Earth has warmed and cooled time and again. Climate has changed when the planet received more or less sunlight due to subtle shifts in its orbit, as the atmosphere or surface changed, or when the Sun’s energy varied. But in the past century, another force has started to influence Earth’s climate: humanity.” NASA Earth Observatory has also been researching global warming and the greenhouse effect This means that it may be a bit too late to completely stop global warming, but we can do stuff to prevent the situation from worsening. While it may seem like we have plenty of time, if we do not act fast, global warming will take over our planet.

Global warming is already bad, but what would you say if I told you people are dying because of it? Many people can, and already have, gotten sick and died because of pollution. Soil pollution destroys crops, so many people can starve to death. Children with, or without, breathing problems can get sick because the air they breathe is unhealthy. The American Heart Association tells us that “Pollution can come from traffic, factories, power generation, wildfires or even cooking with a wood stove. One of the most common indoor sources is smoking — a danger to the person lighting up and to those nearby.”

Though anyone can be exposed, people who live near road intersections or factories or who direct traffic are particularly at risk, Dr. Luepker said.

“Breathing in this stuff all the time, they seem to have increased problems,” he said.

Many factors contribute to heart disease, including your genes. But Dr. Luepker said growing medical evidence links air pollution and heart disease.”. Heart disease has been getting worse due to air pollution, so we have to put a stop to it. “Pollution is one of the biggest global killers, affecting over 100 million people. That’s comparable to global diseases like malaria and HIV.” says DoSomething.org 100 million people! This means that pollution has already murdered over 100 million people, and if we keep it up even more people will die. Researchers from MIT’s Laboratory for Aviation and the Environment have come out with some sobering new data on air pollution’s impact on Americans’ health. The group tracked ground-level emissions from sources such as industrial smokestacks, vehicle tailpipes, marine and rail operations, and commercial and residential heating throughout the United States, and found that such air pollution causes about 200,000 early deaths each year. Emissions from road transportation are the most significant contributor, causing 53,000 premature deaths, followed closely by power generation, with 52,000.”. 53,000 premature deaths! This shows that billions of people of all ages everywhere are dying because of pollution, and we have to do something about it now! If we don’t stop polluting our planet soon, more lives will be lost.

So, we’ve discussed human’s dying, but what about animals? Yup! Animals are also dying because of pollution. “Use of pesticides and fertilizers on farms has increased by 26-fold over the past 50 years, fueling increases in crop production globally. But there have been serious environmental consequences. Indiscriminate pesticide and fertilizer application may pollute nearby land and water, and chemicals may wash into nearby streams, waterways and groundwater when it rains. Pesticides can kill non-target organisms, including beneficial insects, soil bacteria and fish. Fertilizers are not directly toxic, but their presence can alter the nutrient system in freshwater and marine areas. This alteration can result in an explosive growth of algae due to excess nutrients. As a result, the water is depleted of dissolved oxygen, and fish and other aquatic life may be killed.” says WWF. Animals, like us and the planet itself, are being affected by pollution negatively. But while Mother Nature and the human race have contributed to pollution, animals are completely innocent.

After ingesting microplastics, organizations have come to the conclusion that seals, and other animals, may suffer for months or years before they die.

In 2014, an estimated 15 to 51 trillion microplastic particles were floating in the world’s oceans, weighing between 93,000 and 236,000 tonnes. If we keep it up, in the next 40-50 years, our ocean could be filled to the brim with plastic and other garbage.

We have to stop pollution to save our planet. Our planet and everything on it is being affected by pollution in a negative way. When I used to live in Woodbridge, there was a park near my house. I used to go there everyday when I was little. But one day I went there and the park was covered in litter. It was disgusting! My friends and I cleaned up a little, but there was so much trash that we barely made a difference. Remember these things the next time you or someone else pollutes the Earth. If we all work together, it may not be too late.

As you can see, we need to stop pollution to save our planet. Global warming, and people and animals dying are only a few of the negative effects pollution has on our planet. We have to take responsibility for what the human race has done. “Preservation of our environment is not a liberal or conservative challenge; it’s common sense.” Ronald Reagan said. Let us join hands and fix the effects humankind has had on our planet, and let’s do it together.

Animal abuse
by: Neila

Dog’s purpose in life is to entertain humans and to live there life and also to guard` humans but how can they do that if dog’s are being abused. Two of the most common forms of animal abuse are animal fighting and Animal shelters. In conclusion animals should be treated the same way people treat each other

Animals need to be treated better because they are abused. Animal fighting is a common form of animal abuse as I said in the introduction paragraph. In the article Dog fighting from ASPCA it states “Dogs fighting other dogs may have their ears cropped and tails docked close to their bodies.” Also the article states that “dog fights can last just a few minutes or several hours, and both animals may suffer injuries including puncture wounds, lacerations, blood loss, crushing injuries and broken bones.” Also they are regularly conditioned for fighting through the use of drugs, including anabialcs steroids to enhance muscle mass and encourage aggressiveness.” This proves that dog fightings are harmful for dogs. This is one of the reasons out of two why animal abuse has to be taken more seriously.
Animal shelters are also another form of animal abuse. In the article about animal shelter crutily from NBC news states “That an impressive statistic was hiding a dark secret, according to criminal charges laid against its top officials. In the article it states the "model" animal shelter was actually what one investigator called a "house of horrors" — a place where infections ran rampant, animals lived in filthy conditions, food was scarce and a no-euthanasia policy led to sick animals suffering and dying without adequate medical care. Staff then hosed Tanner off with water “as he was coughing up quite a bit of blood,” and took him back to a kennel. This means that a dog was sick really sick and the people did not care they just gave him water no medicine just water and sent him back to the kennel without caring for the dog’s health. This is my last reason why I am against animal abuse.

This is why I think people have to stop animal abuse. Just to to remind you again animal fighting is a form of animal abuse and animal shelters are also another form of animal abuse. People need to care about animals the same way the animals care about the people. A dog’s purpose in life is to entertain humans to guard humans and for the animals to live their life but how can they do that if the animals are being abused. The people should be the ones taking care of animals not the opposite way remember that.

Everybody should have a fair education just like you did. Education can be expensive for those who can't afford it. More people can be literate in the world. On the website The Atlantic it states “Some colleges cost more than 30 thousand dollars a year.”. It's sad because those who can't afford it can't go to college and learn or get a degree but some colleges are trying to find those who can't afford college and they make it cheap “to about 2,500 per year” the website The Atlantic says it's not free but some its something. Rohingya children have run away from war and are going to school for the first time and getting the education they need.
Poverty, consumption and land-use patterns contribute to the degradation of marine habitats and to the destruction of the species that rely on them to survive.” This means that a lot of the animals that are endangered are dying, also habitat doesn't only affect land it affects sea life. If habitat loss does not stop then our animals will become extinct.

By Varsha Kolachina

As Benjamin Franklin once quoted, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” This quote states that you should not take your education for granted. You may not think that your education is important, but lots of people around the world don’t have an opportunity to have an education. Do you know some people don’t have a enough money to afford an education? One's education is priceless, but not every child is getting a education. That’s why I think everyone should I have a free education. My reasons are it costs too much, and there are lots of poor families in this world. Read on to learn why I think everyone should have a free education.

My first reason is that it costs too much. In the article Grace Brethren Schools, it states “The fee is charged separately from tuition to account for the expenses ... Preschool – $145; Elementary - $410; High School - $410; The Academy - $225 (K-6); $425 (7-12); International - $1,000 … .”
In the Daily Herald article, it states “With two children in junior high and another in elementary school, Susie Johannesen's back-to-school bill was already substantial, thanks to new clothes and classroom supplies. But there's also the $624 she owed Cary Elementary District 26 to register the kids for the coming school year.”As you can see, money can make a big difference in a child's future. You shouldn't take your education for granted, as you should be lucky that you have the money to learn.

My second reason is that there are lots of unfortunate families in this world. ” In the article, Moneywise, it states that“ Much of the focus on improving education occurs at the national level, and this results in standards that are geared toward the learning population in general. This means that poor neighbourhoods must live up to the same criteria as all other neighbourhoods. Compounding this problem is the fact that few schools have the resources to help individuals who are failing at school. They are often treated as a statistic that hurts the school's graduation rate.”
In the article, Their World, it states “ Girls working hard at a free, charity-run school in Adonkia, Sierra Leone. Some of the poorest countries in the world struggle to finance an education system for all their children. But evidence shows that if we invest more in education, poverty is reduced at a faster rate, there are long-term health benefits and greater gender equality.” This shows that education is a big part of a humans life and we should be thankful that we have money, homes, shelter, schools, food and water

As you can see, One's education is priceless, but not every child is getting a education. We all need our education, although some people may not know the true importance of it. We should be thankful we get to go to school. An investment in knowledge pays the best interest." Benjamin Franklin once claimed . These are my some out of the many reasons why everyone should have a free education. We should all help those in need by donating money to build schools.

Dirty Water also will affect us and animals just by Water Pollutions.

How would you feel if you didn’t have the choice to choose a good job just because you had a bad education? That’s a problem some people might face. And it isn’t just a small group either, about 42% percent of schools have to deal with problems like these. 42% is way too many schools to be poor in the US, if you ask me. I know it would be alarming for me, and I bet it would be for you too. Education should be fixed and improved for poor schools. Some problems that poor schools could face if the government doesn’t give them enough money is that they won’t be able to teach properly because they need money for supplies, class parties, and even more stuff. Another major problem that schools could face is poor or no AC (Air Conditioning). Read more to find out exactly how these problems could become major issues. And maybe even you could help out these schools by donating.

One way that education should be fixed in some places is by the government donating to schools without enough money to pay for supplies, teachers, and other important stuff. Here’s why. For example imagine if a class doesn’t have enough paper or pencils then the kids won't be able to write down answers to questions. Plus they won't be able to take tests, because there’s no test to take. And if they take turns writing on the board then if all the markers dry out, they might not get more. Which means kids and teachers might have to teach by going out into the grass and counting each piece of grass. Here’s a real life example of a poor school: “On a Friday morning in Chicago, Jerod Franklin, 15 looks at his hands as he thinks of what to type” States the Hechinger Report (As some schools plunge into technology, poor schools are left behind) The Bronzeville Scholastic Institute ninth-graders were working on writing assignments in the school’s homework lab, who had less than 25 computers to use among the thousands of students from 3 different schools in the south side of the DuSable High school campus. “The amount of computers is absurd.” explained English teacher Andrew Flaherty. So what do you think should happen now, to help such schools? Maybe perhaps the government can help with that. And you can too.

Imagine that it’s spring, its 90 degrees outside, your sweating, and so you enter your school for some cold air only to find out that your schools has none. That's a problem that a lot of people face in poor schools. And its not a just a few schools that are too poor to afford air conditioning. Because according to Harvard Graduate Joshua Goodman (As the temperature rises test scores Drop) 42% of schools in the US have either scarce or no air conditioning. 42%!!! That's almost half! Researchers found that weather played a major role from one test to the next. A student's performance dropped by nearly 1 percent of a year's worth of learning for every 1 degree hotter the outside temperature was during the school year before a student took the test. And when the temprature goes above 70 degrees that's when kids start to feel uncomfortable. Its enough to make you wonder about what the government does with its money. But I don't blame just the government. Schools can hold fundraisers you know. And people can donate.

Now do you think that education should be improved and fixed for some schools? Imagine it being you having to deal with no supplies and air conditioning. This is why the government should really give some of its money to help such poor schools. And schools can also try different creative ways of earning money for supplies and air conditioning. Like Lemonade stands. I really hope that in the future if I ever walk into previously poor schools that I see piles of supplies and tons of air conditioning. And I also hope that people know that if they don’t donate, its not just a small group of people in the US who won’t have proper schooling, its 42%.

Habitat Loss is bad for all animals

Habitat loss is bad for all animals but we can stop it so that animals don't get harmed so, Habitat Loss is a big deal to animals and Habitat Loss is when people are cutting down trees to get wood to build house or paper. Here are some reasons why Habitat Loss is bad. That animals are becoming extinct or losing homes and dying. Animals can’t survive without food, water, and shelter just like us because animals are living things like us and we can’t survive without shelter.

Here is a example of habitat loss and why its bad. Animals have nowhere to live. Like in the article WWF it said “A bulldozer pushing down trees is the iconic image of habitat destruction. Other ways people directly destroy habitat include filling in wetlands, dredging rivers, mowing fields, and cutting down tree”it also says “Habitat is lost and degraded when natural or human-caused activities alter these places so that fewer species can live there. For example, when a section of forest is cut down and replaced with farmland or urban spaces, the living places of hundreds of species may be eliminated.” This shows if i was a animal i would be very sad if my home was cut down.I don’t think animals wouldn’t be happy if there home got cut down for wood either too. This reason explains why habitat loss is bad for the environment and bad for animals.

Animals are dying because they can’t get food is another sign of habitat loss. LIke a example in the article CRD is “Freshwater wildlife are most impacted by pollution. Pollutants such as untreated sewage, mining waste, acid rain, fertilizers and pesticides concentrate in rivers, lakes and wetlands and eventually end up in estuaries and the food web”. This reason is a bad sign of habitat loss because they can’t get the food that they need to eat. “Fragemation can separate animals from one another and from their food sources. This happens both in water and on land. Beneath the water, structures such as dams tend to isolate species from one another, making it more difficult for them to mate and find food. For the many animals that depend on migration to preserve their species, fragmenting habitats takes away this advantage”.This reason explains why we should stop habitat loss because animals don't get the food that they need to survive

Animals are becoming extinct. This is why “Habitat destruction occurs when natural habitats are no longer able to support the species present, resulting in the displacement or destruction of its biodiversity. Examples include harvesting fossil fuels, deforestation, dredging rivers, bottom trawling, urbanization, filling in wetlands and mowing fields “.Habitat loss poses the greatest threat to species. The world's forests, swamps, plains, lakes, and other habitats continue to disappear as they are harvested for human consumption and cleared to make way for agriculture, housing, roads, pipelines and the other hallmarks of industrial development. Without a strong plan to create terrestrial and marine protected areas important ecological habitats will continue to be lost” These are al my reason why habitat loss is

My reasons are animals have nowhere to live because trees are getting cut down, Animals are dying because they can’t get the food they need, and animals are becoming extinct. We can stop habitat loss by not cutting down trees. We can also stop habitat loss by using less wood to make materials. These Reasons are good reasons on why we should stop habitat loss because animals shouldn't be harmed by anything when they just want a good home to be safe.

Smoking is bad

American Cancer society states,¨Each year more than

480,000 people in the United States die from illnesses related to tobacco use.¨ This means that tons of people are in trouble from smoking and got seriously killed, or died from illnesses caused by smoking. Smoking is bad for people and the environment. These are my reasons why smoking is bad. Smoking can cause lung cancer, smoking It is a waste of money, and smoking makes pollution. At the end of this essay I will prove that smoking is bad and should be treated more seriously.

My first reason is smoking can cause lung cancer. Did you know that about one in fifteen people get cancer from smoking? This can cause more and more people to smoke That's not all about half the deaths from twelve combined, cancers are caused by smoking. Mayo clinic states, “People who smoke have the greatest risk of lung cancer.” This means cancer can also carry onto the child if the father or mother if they had cancer, or if they smoked. This can cause cancer to multiply and more and more people will get cancer. This is one thing smoking can do to people.

My second reason is that smoking is a waste of money. The

reason cigarettes are addictive because they have a drug called nicotine which makes smoking addictive, then you want to spend more money. NIDA for teens said that, “Let’s say you smoke one pack a week at the average price of $5.50 per pack that’s $22 a month and $264 a year.” Over I think I could buy something better to spend $264 dollars. Buying cigarettes will just make buy more because off nicotine. You also need to pay medical bills if you get a disease or cancer so that's even more money wasted. Smoking just steals all your money.

My third and final reason is that smoking makes pollution. Berkeley

Earth says, “When we published our scientific paper on air pollution in China in August 20151, we were surprised by the attention we got for a quick comparison we made comparing air pollution on a particularly bad day in Beijing to smoking 1.5 cigarettes every hour.” TFL/Tobacco free life states, “as if that wasn’t enough, every year researchers find more and more evidence that smoking, and the tobacco industry in general, are harming the planet we live on, causing irreparable damage to ecosystems, polluting water, land, and air and pushing Earth towards a global cataclysm.” This means smoking doesn't just cause air pollution, it can also cause water and land pollution when people just throw their cigarettes on the ground and same thing with throwing the tobacco-filled cigarettes in landfills. This causes more pollution, since cigarettes are non-recyclable.

Smoking is bad because smoking can cause disease and cancer, smoking It is a huge waste of money, and smoking creates pollution. Smoking is bad for people and the environment, smoking is bad because smoking can cause disease and cancer, smoking is a huge waste of money, and smoking creates pollution. American Cancer Society states, “Each year more than 480,000 people in the United States die from illnesses related to tobacco use.” I hope this proved that people would stop smoking so the environment and people can live healthier together. strong conclusion

VANDALISM: SS

Do you know how much vandalism there is on our earth? There is a ton because people think that vandalism is something fun to do and it doesn’t harm anything but, it harms a lot of things. Vandalism can be artistic but, it also can cause a lot of problems. Vandalism harms the earth and should be taken more seriously. Vandalism isn’t always appropriate, vandalism could be permanent. In conclusion we should all take vandalism more seriously and notice the effects it can do to the world.

Vandalism isn’t always appropriate because people who do vandalism put whatever they want and wherever they choose. In the article Project for public spaces it states,”Social relationships within a park space, control of that space by particular groups, and how the space is used all have a significant influence on park use and perceptions of safety.” This means that vandalism is taking over hangout spots because in certain places you go there can possibly be a whole ton of vandalism there. In this article it tells you about a park being a scary place for people because it might make people scared of the person who is doing the vandalism. Some people who do vandalism know what happens when you do it, and that can make the person really scary because they don’t really care about the consequences. Next, in kiddle, the article Graffiti for kids it states,”Graffiti has been found in very old cities. For example, in the Roman Empire, people wrote messages and drew caricatures on walls. Graffiti is also found in many places. Some of people do murals of graffiti rather than just writing one mark in a location. It was used for good instead of vandalism. Probably the simplest graffiti is when a person cuts (or carves) the name of a lover on a tree with a knife.” This proves that people who don’t feel like buying spray paint they look for household items to use for vandalism. For example in the text it stated that people use a knife to carve into trees and do whatever they want to do and people just do whatever they want with their vandalism. This is just one of the many reasons why vandalism isn’t always appropriate.

Vandalism sometimes is permanent and when it’s permanent it can damage a lot things. In the article Toronto Summit Protests it states,” Protests mainly consisted of peaceful demonstrations and rallies but also took form of a riot as a group of protesters using black bloc tactics caused vandalism to several businesses in Downtown Toronto.” This shows that Some people protest for vandalism and for vandalism to be banned and some people want it to stay. For example on halloween some people egg houses just to make halloween more fun but, it makes the owner have to clean all off. If there were people in my neighborhood who went around vandalising everything, that wouldn’t really make me to happy about where I am living because then all I would see is vandalism. Next, in the article Toronto Summit Protests in the text it states that,” More than 20,000 police, military, and security personnel were involved in policing the protests, which at its largest numbered 10,000 protesters. While there were no deaths, 97 officers and 39 arrestees were injured, and at least 40 shops were vandalised, constituting at least C$750,000 worth of damage.” This explains vandalism is ruining some people’s lives because half of the people in this world agree with vandalism being around and the other half hate vandalism. In the end Vandalism has people angry and the other half happy, people need to know that vandalism isn’t always a good thing.

In conclusion vandalism harms the earth and should be taken more seriously and just remember that vandalism isn’t always appropriate and Vandalism could be permanent. I personally think people in this world shouldn’t be able to vandalise things that shouldn’t be vandalise and I think that vandalism is art but just isn’t cool to do to other peoples stuff. Do you think Vandalism should be banned from earth? Vandalism isn’t something you do just to be cool because vandalism makes people mad and it could possibly get you in huge trouble.

Habitat loss Theodore roosevelt states “The wild life and its habitat cannot speak, and we must and we will.” The animals cannot speak for themselves so we should speak up for them. Habitat loss should be handled more seriously. I care for habitat loss because it puts animals in danger and the animals have small advantages Here are my three reasons why habitat loss is harmful. First, Animals are suffering because they're losing their homes. Second, Habitat loss can cause extinction the animals. Third, Habitat loss is a great threat to animals and nature. These are two reasons why habitat loss should be handled more seriously. Habitat loss also causes extinction. in the article endangered species from National Geographic.” Dinosaurs, for instance, lost their habitat about sixty-five million years ago. As tropical forests contain at least half the Earth's species, the clearance of some seventeen million hectares each year is a dramatic loss”. This shows habitat loss can extinct Animals. Extinction is happening because of habitat loss.Habitat loss is a great threat to animals and nature. Habitat loss poses the greatest threat to species. in the article endangered species from National Geographic.” The world's forests, swamps, plains, lakes, and other habitats continue to disappear as they are harvested for human consumption and cleared to make way for agriculture, housing, roads, pipelines and the other hallmarks of industrial development. Without a strong plan to create terrestrial and marine protected areas important ecological habitats will continue to be lost”. This proves why habitat loss is a great threat to animals. These three pieces of evidence shows you why habitat loss is not the right thing to do and should be banned or illegal immediately. Theodore roosevelt states “The wild life and its habitat cannot speak, and we must and we will.” this evidence is in the article endangered species from National Geographic. This evidence shows you why habitat loss is not the right thing to do and should be banned or illegal immediately. People should stop hunting animals to take their homes. This is a common problem all over the world and should be banned everywhere, when there should be trees there should be no habitat loss included. My reasons were first, Animals are suffering because they're losing their home, second, Habitat loss can cause extinction the animals. Third, Habitat loss is a great threat to animals and nature. People should stop hunting animals to take their homes. Habitat loss is a problem all over the world and should be banned everywhere, when there should be trees there should be no habitat loss included.
