      <description>&quot;The teacher establishes parameters and procedures for inquiry. Students are provided with a hands-on problem to investigate as well as the procedures and materials necessary to complete the investigation. Students discover relationships between variables or generalize from data collected, which in essence leads to the discovery of expected outcomes. The value in using structured inquiry is it allows the instructor to teach students the basics of investigating as well as techniques of using various equipment and procedures that can be used in later more complicated investigations.&quot;</description>

Students start by building basic structures with their blocks, but soon begin adding additional objects such as stairs and elevators as they explore how, why, and where we bulid towers.</p>]]></description>

         <title>Discovering Surface Areas</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Students are given triangles and the "SPORT" algorithm in order to find the surface area of each triangle. After the initial instructions are given, students work independently to find the rule in finding the surface area of triangles. Students are able to work at finding the answers on their own, but have the structure of where to go to next.</p>]]></description>

         <title>Relating to My Learning Targets</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>We do not study how towers are made, or why, but we do study study volume. Students could use this type of activity to explore volume, how to find the volume of different objects, and how the shape of the structure effects the volume. My students would find this very interesting and love getting to explore with blocks and having the ability to create on their own.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>One of the ways that I would be able to modify this type of lesson for my students would be to allow students to use online simulations of towers or buildings to find the volumes instead of just the basic use of a tower. Students would be able to see how different towers are built and the types of volume they have based on shape.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>This relates easily to my learning targets through the use of surface area. As of now, we do not teach the algorithms for triangles, but we are learning about the area and perimeter of basic shapes. By allowing students to explore and find their own algorithms for the area and perimeter I would be able to make the learning more engaging and meaningful.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>A modification or enhancement that could be made to this activity would be to allow students to use the iPad application Geoboards to form different shapes as they feel necessary. This modification would get students more engaged, and make it more interesting instead of just using paper or other manipulatives.</p>]]></description>
