It began to change the curriculum based on the needs and interests of the students. One philosopher, John Dewey, disagreed with many of the progressives' views about the change of education. 
Some things he disagreed with was the differentiated curriculum, vocational training in schools, and a limited view of human capacity. 
Instead he supported things like a unified curriculum, manual training like occupations of life, and proper education.

Since the 1980's, traditionalism has dominated the schooling system. 
Progressive education today is typically associated with child-centered progressivism. 
Progressive educators believed that education should be child-centered, should serve as a guide, teach them problem solving, educate them not only intellectually but also emotionally, spiritually, morality, physically, and socially.  
Although progressivism is often associated with education and schooling, it was former known as "the progressive era" advocating universal schooling. 
John Dewey was a huge philosopher who's name is most associated with progressive education.

From the 1890's to the 1920's, education changed drastically. 
These years were known as the Progressive Era, aiming at making progress toward a better society. 
During this era many things happened, like protection for workers was stronger, and women finally got the right to vote, among other things. 
Events like the Progressive Movement arose in response to the negative affects of things like industrialization, and workers fought to improve society. 
There were also many famous reformers in this era like Jane Addams who founded Hull House in Chicago  to help immigrants, and even Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt who implemented worker protection.
Although there was mostly good outcomes from the Progressive Era, there was also downsides to progressivism. 
Reformers achieved many goals, but also promoted discriminatory policies like pursuing a racial agenda that culminated segregation, or the effects Labor unions had on immigration.

John Dewey was one of American pragmatism's early founders, along with others. 
His educational theories and experiments had a global outreach. 
Dewey grew up in a religious family and he belonged to congregations for about thirty-five years and turned away around 1894 as he left for his job in Chicago and then returned to philosophical issues of religion in the 1930's. 
Dewey's naturalism disallows a traditional God. He asks that we think not of a singular object but the qualities to which God is compared to goodness, wisdom, love and that he represents our highest ideals. 
All of the beliefs he had about religion, and what he forced on others is why exhortation to trade religious faith for common faith is a piece of his experimental ideal of democracy.

In 1937, Dewey published his article "Education and Social Change"
His thoughts and ideas with the role of education had a tremendous influence on work of later educational philosophers. Dewey was convinced that the power of education could change society. 
Young children are curious, flexible, and experimenting with their lives as they grow, and school should help them along that journey. 
Dewey once used a metaphor of teachers trying to pour knowledge into "empty heads" of children because all we ever have them do is sit and listen to the information given to them. 
Dewey also believed that there was a close relationship between experience and education, btu that they are not the same. 
According to Deweyan theory, students learn from positive experiences by reflecting on them, and if teachers don't require focus-on-meaning from their students, they won't educate them but only train them.
Dewey pointed us in this direction long ago, and if schools and educational systems are serious about fixing the problems we've had and still have today, then they should move in the direction Dewey theorized and fought to implement all those years ago.

The Progressive movement was a turn of the century political movement. 
It began with a domestic agenda, with people being interested in establishing more transparent and accountable governments. 
Many Progressives, like Roosevelt, saw zero conflict between imperialism and reform and instead saw an opportunity to further the agenda. 
After the violence that the Philippine-American War caused, other reformers started vocalizing their opinions and thoughts about the imperialism and continued to increase intervention under Dollar Diplomacy policies. 
Progressive movement also spilt over the ratification of the Treaty of Versailles. 
Fortunately in the 1920's, the Progressive movement began to overturn and helped different movements come to light like ending women's suffrage, and pushing for further change for many other things.
