Q1: What are the top five qualities you admire most in others? Why?
A1: The top five qualities I admire the most in others are honesty, loyalty, kindness, humility, and forgiveness. I admire honesty because no matter the circumstance; they will only show the truth, no matter how brutal it may be. I admire loyalty because it shows that no matter what happens, they will always be by my side and willing to help and stay with me. I adore kindness because it shows they have a nice and calm attitude towards others, which I find really hard to do at times. I admire humility because no matter how many achievements one may accomplish, they are still down to earth and will not boast or talk about to others, something that I struggle with a bit. Finally, I admire forgiveness because no matter how much of a falling out they might have had with the other person, they have the a bility to forget about it and move on to make amends with that person.
Q2: Who are your role models/heroes and how do they influence you?
My role models are Warren Buffet and Eric Berry. Warren Buffet is very humble for a man of his stature and is very down to earth with everyone. He also uses his money wisely and makes sure that he doesn’t view himself better than others. I was influenced by this because it shows even a man who is a billionare - one of the highest accomplishments ever- is still down to earth which means I should also stay humble. Eric Berry survived cancer and came back to play football at a higher level than before he was diagnosed with it. He showcased the definition of hard work and perseverance against almost impossible to beat odds. He influenced me to work harder and to always try to break through tough obstacles.

Sonny’s Relationship with his Family

Sonny has a strained relationship with his father and brother. On the contrary, he has a special connection which his mother because she is the only one that sees potential in Sonny. Sonny might define family as a person’s personal motivation to fulfill his or her goals. In the case of Sonny, his family motivates him in different positive and negative ways. For instance, Sonny’s father shows zero interest in what Sonny wants to do and is neglectful toward his son. Sonny uses this as motivation and “wood for fire” for his project. His older brother Jim thinks of Sonny as a disgrace to their family since he isn’t athletic. Jim utters in disgust that,“Boys don’t play nonna team gotta be chicken. Boys play inna band gotta be real chicken! My brother’s a sister.” (Hickam, Jr. 29). These words stung Sonny but he used it as extra “fuel” for his rocket. The only person to support and believe fully in Sonny is his mother who keeps telling him he must get out of Coalwood. She cares about Sonny and hopes he doesn’t end up like his father or other people working in the mine. His father on the other hand is against Sonny’s ambition of rockets and tells him to stop because he sees Sonny working as a miner in the future. After one of Sonny’s failed rocket projects, his father angrily exclaims, “This is the end of it and I mean it this time. Collect stamps, catch frogs, keep bugs in a jar, do whatever you want. But no more rockets.“ (Homer Hickam, Jr. 95). Sonny is met with adversity and discourage from his father about his father but later on uses it as his wood to his fire. He realizes that he must succeed, not only to prove all of his doubters wrong, but also to show that he is not a disgrace to his family. Everytime Sonny fails, he remembers he must keep going because he needs to show that he is better than Coalwood has to offer and prove his mother right and his father wrong. For Sonny, his family motivates him in different ways to help him fulfill his eventual goal, making a fully functional rocket. Sonny’s family plays the role of motivation for Sonny to succeed because he realizes to be accepted and recognized, he must persevere and succeed by building a rocket.
