I think that our lives have for so long been defined by the rules, expectations and knowledge of colonial systems, that there are very few aspects of our lives that have not been touched by colonialism. To me, the real issue is that this version of society, this version of knowledge is seen as the only correct one, the common sense one and to hope and wish for difference is to fly in the face of logic. Colonialism is what happens when one state maintains political/economic/social control over another nation or state through the usage of coercive power, extraction, dispossession, violence, and oppression. Neocolonialism is the leftovers of colonialism after the colony has been “liberated” — how colonial states still maintain control over the colonization, despite their direct influence and control being no longer applicable.

Neocolonialism exists in all elements of society. Parenting with violence is colonial in nature- Indigenous communities do not use violence when parenting (see: Hunt, Gather, Parent) (also note a statement that I see sometimes in decolonial parenting spaces: “the whitest thing you can do is beat a Black child”)

Consider the national anthem: “our home and native land”. Enough said, I hope

When mobility is so accessible in modern society, even if only for a few months, few years, not acknowledging the land based knowledge & humanities, it is solely exploitive, the culture of the land is slowly depleted, causing the same effect as colonialism.
