How do you think the people are feeling in the video?

Ans.
I think the people are feeling rather relaxed and calm when they come to the library to read for leisure. Some may have come with their friends; some with their family and some alone. All in all, I think they must be feeling enthusiastic to get their hands on the latest best-selling books or simply, to catch up with their loved ones over a favourite book or to just have some alone time buried in the world of fantasy and mystery.

Qn. When was the last time you visited a library? What was memorable about it?
Ans.
The last time I visited the library was the one in school. My teacher brought us there to select a book based on our interests and our favourite genres. Being an avid fan of Singapore's Ghost Stories, I chose a book from the horror section. In fact, all of my friends like horror stories and we sat down together to read our books. The fun part about it was the fact that we enjoyed each other's company without having to speak. Lastly, we would exchange stories and spook ourselves out only to realise that it is only fiction.

Qn. Some people say that libraries will become obsolete in this digital age. What are your views?

Ans.
Personally, I do not think that libraries will become obsolete in this age. (State your stand)

Firstly, the library provides a conducive space for us to find some peace and quiet to immerse ourselves in a good book. (P)
Some of us do not have the luxury of a comfortable space to read or do research at home. (E)
Also, the librarians are available to help point us in the right direction if we want to find the most relevant and appropriate material for our research or study.(E)

However, many books are now available in digital formats that bring us much ease and convenience. (P)
You can now easily download any e-books you want from the library and access it via one mobile device.(E)
This way, we do not have to lug heavy books around and worry about returning our library books on time since we can now do so from our phones. (E)

In a nutshell, I still believe that libraries are here to stay. (Restate your stand)
This is because I personally prefer to hold a physical book in my hands as I get absorbed into the story.
Furthermore, libraries are more than just a place to read. It is a place where the community comes together and take part in fun-filled events such as choral reading, arts showcases and workshops that bring people from all walks of life together.

Qn. (personal) What do you think are the benefits of having a library?

Personally, I think that there are many benefits of having a library. Firstly, I used to hate reading because I was not really good in English. However, I wanted to <del>change because I wanted to </del>improve my<del> English skills </del>proficiency of the language and try something new. What got me into reading was the movie "To All The Boys I've Loved". I love how she could describe what she read in a book to actually help us imagine what she was reading. For me, I found that very interesting because I wanted to experience that too, the feeling of wandering into the unknown. How a book can get you to any type of settings, <del>such as be</del> be it in space or even in a meadow. However, it wasn't easy for me to make reading a habit because I for one am a very active person who needs to walk around and cannot sit still, but with frequent trips to the library, I actually adapted reading into my daily routine.

Secondly, the library has helped me improve my vocabulary drastically. <del>However, </del>when I was younger, I didn't have as much of an interest in books as I do now because I used to find it boring. <del>When I enrolled</del> in primary school, I started going to the school library every week during recess with my friends, and that was when my vocabulary started improving. Going to the library <del>started becoming </del>became something for me to look forward to because the thought of reading a new book and going on a new 'adventure' was thrilling for me. Going to the library felt like I was on a shopping spree because of the wide array of books that were available to me. <del>When I was in primary school,</del> I used to love books written by Roald Dahl because of the adventures and fantasy it brought. I think that going to the library has had a huge impact on the range of my vocabulary now and to this day, it is still one of my biggest takeaways.

Thirdly, a library gives children access to a place to study efficiently. This is because some children may live in a noisy environment, making it hard to concentrate on studying and reading. However, a library is the exact opposite of a noisy home, thus providing a suitable location to study as no one will be able to <del>disturb</del> disrupt / interrupt our train of thoughts. For example, my friends and I love to go to the library after school and study, and we think it is a good place to have as our grades and our love for reading have significantly increased ever since we started going to the library and study. Therefore, this proves the fact that the library is a conducive place to study in and it is a must-have facility.

In a nutshell, going to the library brings many benefits.

Personal response well-developed and introduces personal response, opinions and issues on the topic. Good use of vocab 'array' 'drastically' and good control of SS and exp

Qn: Teenagers these days would prefer to spend more time on their phones than to go to the library to read a book. Do you agree?

Consider: Teenagers these days would prefer to spend more time on their phones than to go to the library to read a book. Do you agree? (Global)

Yes, I do agree that teenagers would prefer to spend more time on their phones than going to the library to read a book. With the advancements of technology, phones have made our life more convenient, so people would often rely on technology to do what?. <del>Having</del> With the abundance of choices of what we can do on our phones as compared to what we can only do with a book, it is not surprising that teenagers would prefer to use their phones. From communicating to playing games. (which item allows u to do this? specify! complete the list of things you can do with the phone ) Although I do agree with the fact that technology has brought many benefits in our lives, we must not forget about having time off the screen. I think that reading a book in the library is one great way to escape from the digital world, <del>from fantasy to reality</del>, there is definitely no limit to where books can take us. Teenagers often neglect the beauty held within each book and hence would always complain about their mundane lives. With the life lessons in each book, it would feel much more meaningful reading it on paper than reading it from a screen. To add on, the quiet environment of the library would also help us think about life. Personally, i find that i rather read a book in a quiet library than use a phone. It’s mainly because i like to do things the traditional way! There are so many disadvantages that can come from using a phone <del>that ,when reading a book, does not occur.</del> For example: Technologies can cause people to be addicted to it and sometimes, very severely. Adding onto that, the human body also absorbs energy from these devices that emit electromagnetic radiation and can cause extreme harm to one’s body. Using technologies can have many disadvantages whereas, reading a book can not only help you read better and increase creativity and imagination. My school invented an assembly program where all the students has to read a book for a period of time and i like this idea because students are often busy with school work and extra curricular lessons, and give excuses as to why they aren’t reading as much. This can improve the students’ reading ability and can improve their vocabulary and english. I’ve heard that by reading, you can even lower your stress levels!
Link back to restate your point or else your ending may sound abrupt.

Personal response devp to a large extent; good use of vocab 'mundane' and good control of SS and exp; Introduce new ideas, opinions and issues

Has reading left any positive impact on you? If yes, how so and if not, why not?

Ans:

Yes. Reading has always been omnipresent in my life and has shed some light on my life in a number of ways.

One of them <del>being,</del> is decisiveness. As the saying goes, ‘we lose ourselves in books just as how we find ourselves there too.’ Often times we can gain some insight from the stories we have read and apply it to our own problems. In my case, making the right decision was never easy for me and I always struggled with being decisive. The element of the unknown always left me wondering if things could have turned out better had I decided otherwise. However, after picking up a copy of the book, Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman. I realized that I was able to make confident decisions without a trace of lingering regret. Books have certainly opened my eyes and left me with something to remember. taught me imparted in me many life lessons which will serve m well in my life.

Personal response well-developed.

Qn. (personal qn) A good library depends on its visitors to follow the rules to make our time spent there a pleasant one. What are your views?

Consider: A good library depends on its visitors to follow the rules to make our time spent there a pleasant one. What are your views? (Personal Qn)

Ans. I agree that a good library depends on its visitors to follow the rules to make our time spent there a pleasant one. The Library is a public place and everyone is expected to have an enjoyable time there. However, it is common to see people being selfish and affect others in the library. Therefore, i think it is necessary to be more strict on library rules.

Firstly, people should not occupy spaces that others could sit. I have been to the library many times and I always see people place their bags on the seat next to them. This is an inconsiderate and selfish act <del>of them</del> as this prevents others from having a place to comfortably sit when they have found a book to read.

Secondly, people should not eat in the library. I have experienced this a few times and once, when I was doing my intensive revision for my end of year examinations, the people who were sitting beside me were eating biscuits and this distracted my intensive revision for my end of year examinations. This would attract bugs, cockroaches, ants and many more<del> </del><del>insects</del> pests <del>to come if they dropped any of the food. </del>It would hence result in the library to be dirty and besides, they <del>have not thought</del> should spare a thought for the of the cleaners who have to deal with the mess they made after they left.

Thirdly, people should not talk loudly in the library as this would affect other people. Sometimes when I go to the library, I would hear people talk and laugh loudly with their friends, and other times, I would hear people talking loudly on the phone. This really annoys and irritates me as most of us just wants to have a peaceful and quiet place to study or read books.

Last but not least, if the library books were not returned to the correct place, people would have to be troubled to go to the information counter to check if the book they want<del>ed</del> in is currently available. Often at times, when i go to a library people will just leave the books on the tables or floors once they are done reading. This is an irresponsible and self-centred act as they have not thought of other people who wants to read the same book.

All in all, we should practise good library etiquette when we are within library premises
(๑>◡<๑) have a nice day!

thoughtful personal responses that are developed to a large extent;
some good use of vocab 'etiquette';
accurate sentence struc

Qn 3 (Global qn):
‘Reading is essential to our lives’. What are your views on this and why?

I agree that reading is essential to our lives because it helps with our vocabulary and language. Reading not only gives us the vocabulary needed to ace English, it also gives <del>you</del> us a <del>very</del> vivid imagination to create and think. To be honest, most of my essays are mostly imaginary based. When I cannot think of any proper words to use for a particular sentence, I would use ideas that I pick up from the books I read to help my readers visualize what I am trying to bring across to them. (link your ideas back to the point on reading and imagination) <del>very animated ideas to put in place.</del> <del>For</del><del> example, if I want to write ‘life is not all glitz and glamour’, I can change it to ‘life is not all sunshine and rainbows’. This would allow the reader to imagine SpongeBob Squarepants’ “imagination” quote, which is literally him drawing a drawing a rainbow. </del>Similarly, reading is essential because not many people like to read anymore. (Check! Reading is necessary because people do not read anymore? Change to: However, many teens like me may not enjoy reading anymore)How many students have you seen in school actually reading during Silent Reading period? I would say, not much. Many would pretend to read, <del>but in fact,</del> or worse, playing <del>they are doing</del> Sudoku on the Reader’s Digest book! And you must admit that some students hate reading. But why? One of the English teachers told me, “If you have no interest in reading, it is because you are not reading the “right” book! You have to find a book that suits your taste and genre style. That’s how you get hooked on to books!” That is true. By reading, my English grades skyrocketed through my secondary school years as compared to my primary school days. This shows that reading can improve language. In our 21st century, t<del>echnology becomes so advanced that entertainment comes in the form of televised shows and comedy acts</del>. many Movies are being reenacted to "mirror" books. For example, the <del>book</del> Archie Comics, is being showcased as the show, Riverdale. People would rather watch a one hour show than spend so much time reading books, because it saves time and money. (not valid because both costs money, i.e. a Netflix subscription costs money too) Consider: people no longer have the patience to sit through an entire novel and would rather watch something that provides immediate entertainment. Movies and shows are more realistic compared to books, and people are hooked on to this so-called reality because it is more relatable. This is why many people have difficulty writing descriptive essays because they do not possess much imaginative thoughts to describe. creativity and imagination to express their thoughts The vocabulary used in movies and shows are much more “realistic” and coarse than books so they would usually write expository or argumentative essays. Either way, will their English improve? I don’t know. But I know that reading will improve one’s vocabulary and language and that is why reading is so essential to our lives.

<del>Secondly</del> Lastly, I agree that reading is essential to our lives as it helps to expand our knowledge about the world. As newspapers and magazines contain rich sources of information, we can get to discover new things <del>if we read them. Through reading, we can know more about </del>the different cultures and hidden facts in the world. Also, I think it is crucial so that we know what is going on around the world. For example, reading about the current <del>pandemic </del>outbreak of Covid-19 gives us an idea about how the situation is like and what are the precautions we should take to prevent it. In my opinion, I feel that we should we should get more exposed to the world news. Hence, reading plays a crucial role in acquiring knowledge.

Personal response devp to a large extent; some SS errors but good intro of new ideas, opinions and issues; good vocab
