Think of creativity as a skill.

This is done in math all the time.

I like this idea. I do not mind focusing on something, but feel like these are "teachable moments" that some times just show up as I progress through the semester. There are many situations were I stop and focus the discussion on ways to study for the upcoming test, other situations I discuss time management, other times where I work on how to take notes . . .I would also like to consider addressing these with young students during study hall. Some students have this down, and are usually the ones that are succeeding.

Wouldn't this be better suited to 9th/10th grade study halls and Connections? We have this time (specifically during Connections) where we could work with them on these skills so we can keep class time structured around how apply those skills to our content.

How to Use Notes

I find for the most part my students do a great job of taking notes, and many know how to use them, but there are also many students who never look at their notes again.
It could be as simple as before a Warm Up problem, have the students find the corresponding section in their notes, have them talk with their partner for one min about how the warm up is similar to the problem in the notes, and then have them solve the warm up problem. For some, just pointing out or teaching how useful the notes can be might be helpful.

I think that giving students a crash course on how to be more effective note takers would be great. Even in college this is a skill that is so valuable to have! If they were taught some more effective ways of taking and organizing notes I believe most students would be more successful in school in general.

Well, the 9th grade task force made an attempt at this last year or the year before, guess it didn't really go anywhere. Math was to take on study skills and use review packets as the venue with which we help to review. Maybe we do it but don't communicate explicitly that we've done it.
