Paulo Freire was a Brazilian educator, philosopher, and social justice activist who lived from 1921 to 1997, from Recife, Penambuco. The most well-known contributions he made to critical pedagogy are those found in his ground-breaking book "Pedagogy of the Oppressed."

The method of education put out by Paulo Freire's upends the established hierarchical structures of the teacher-student interaction. In order to change oppressive social conditions, Freire advocates for a pedagogy built on dialogue and praxis, in which students and teachers participate in critical thought and action.

Moreover, he places a strong emphasis on the necessity of conscientization, also known as critical consciousness, which enables people to fight for emancipation by making them aware of their social and political surroundings. By empowering marginalized populations to critically examine their own experiences and take an active role in determining their own futures, Freire promotes an education that will transformatively lead to a more just and equitable society.

Source: https://www.cultura.gob.ar/paulo-freire-11132/
