I am handling the lower section class. All students here are slow learners (not trying to judge them) they cannot even read simple words and they have very low comprehension. They are already in 9th grade. Spoon-feeding them has become our daily routine. The learner-centered teaching strategy is hard to implement in this class. I tried to let them do self-paced activity but they don't want to work on it. If you think this is a myth, can you enlighten me on how should I apply an LC strategy in my class?

-Darlene May B. Aranzado

What is the role of Evaluation in a Learner-centered teaching?

In a learner-centered teaching. evaluation activities are used in ways to promote learning and giving of grades to the learners. Likewise evaluation processes are opened to students in ways to give them opportunities to develop self- and peer assessment skills. Grades motivate students to learn. Summative assessment given at the end of the course is the basis of giving grades, and eventually of awards and recognition. Learners need to see that there is more than giving of grades when encountering the contents of the course while preparing for the exams whether formative or summative Learning matters more than grades especially during studying. On the part of the teacher, focus should be done on using the exam to promote learning and also as a means of feedback mechanism in which to serve as a basis for remediation and intervention during formative assessment.

One misconception of an LC classroom is that learners get to choose what they will learn and how and when to learn it. However, a learner-centered classroom means a teacher acts as an effective guide in being able to create a discussion where children also have input and are able to learn in ways comfortable to them. This may be as simple as having those who write better on the floor not use their seats, using group discussions, or asking the children their thoughts and insights on the matter at hand. Hearing from the students and listening to them allows us to better provide an environment conducive for learning specifically for their class.

It is based on the idea that all learners are unique and have different learning styles and needs. Learner-centered teachers create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning, where students are actively engaged in the learning process. They provide opportunities for students to learn at their own pace and in a way that is most effective for them. Traditional teaching, on the other hand, is teacher-centered. The focus is on the teacher, who delivers the content to students. Students are expected to passively listen and absorb the information that is presented to them. Traditional teachers typically lecture to students and use textbooks as the primary source of information.
