Differences between Athens and Spartan Physical Education.

·         Athenians Physical Education main objective was for the physical perfection with the emphasis of physique, while Spartan Physical Education main objective was to greatly contribute to the strong and powerful army.

·         During Physical Education in Spartan, people don’t have their freedom for the reason that after 6 or 7 years old they were sent to military school to have a brutal training then after 18 years old students were trained to use weapon and art of war, and after training they need to serve in army at least 20-30 years, while in Athens, people have their own freedom for the reason that they are not regulated and controlled.

·         Spartan, Physical Activities are composed of running, leaping, javelin throwing, military drill, wrestling, hunting, horseback riding, as well as to be discipline itself and it has different stages in education system while in Athens their Physical Activities composed of athletics, music, writing, reading, dancing, ethical poems, literature, counting, geometry, drawing and arithmetic as well as in this sense, physical competition was for honoring respected soldier who are killed in the battle as well as to honor Gods.

 

1. The main objective of their physical education is for the strengthening of the army.

2. They have strict regulation and implementation of physical education and activities.

3. Since the main objective of physical education is to prepare them to serve and fight for battles or war, many of their activities are wrestling, hunting, military drill and more that require a huge amount of strength.

2. They have the individual freedom to perform physical activities.

3. Their main reason for physical activities and competitions is to honor their gods and important individuals so their activities are more focused on athletics, music, dancing, gymnastics and many more.

1. Physical education is to acquire all-around physical excellence since this physical education emphasizes the physique. In the Spartan period, the purpose or reason why they introduced Spartan Physical Education was to produce a strong and powerful army to become a warrior in war.

2. People do not have their own independence in spartan, they are forced to attend military school at the age of 7 and are prepared to utilize weapons of war at the age of 18. After the training, each trainee was expected to serve in the army for at least 20 to 30 years.

3.  Lastly children are nourished by heroic stories.


ATHENS

1. Athens puts an emphasis on the mind as well as the physique. They not only achieve a masculine figure, but they also develop a great mentality to things. 

2. The greatest motivation for physical exertion for Athenians was the competition. It was held in honor of a soldier that was died in battle and to pay tribute to the gods. 

3. They have a gymnasium to held events and tournaments. 

1. The primary goal of Spartan physical education was to significantly contribute to a strong and powerful army. It creates a military caste of tough, hardy, fearless men capable of defeating all external foes. While the primary goal of Athenians' physical education was physical perfection, with an emphasis on physique. It were dedicated to balance and harmony, both body and mind were developed through physical education.

2. Spartans developed different physical activities such as running, leaping, jumping, javelin throwing, military drill, wrestling, hunting, horseback riding, and self-discipline. While Physical activities in Athens are music, writing, reading, dancing, ethical poems, literature, counting, geometry, drawing, and arithmetic.

3. Athenian's life was not controlled and regulated as in Sparta, they also enjoyed individual freedom. While in Sparta, young boys were sent off to military training from early childhood. Their lives in barracks revolved partially around exercising, fighting one another, and being sent to the wilderness for survival training.

- Physical education was intended for the physical perfection with a focusing on physique.

- People was not controlled and has an individual freedom.

- The goal of physical education is to improve children's motor, social, emotional, and cognitive development and the major reason for physical competition was to commemorate a revered soldier who was died in war, as well as to honor the gods.

- The purpose of education in Sparta was to produce and maintain a powerful army.

- Physical fitness was the most important of all.

- They were taught sports like sword fighting, wrestling, archery, spear throwing as these were important during the war.

- Their purpose of education was to produce good citizens.

- Only boys were educated and were taught different sports like archery, wrestling, and swimming since they are located near the sea.

- They knew the importance of physical fitness that is why they value Physical Education for it gives emphasis on the beauty of Physique.
