Prejudices at school-Francie and Esperanza both have to work harder to succeed in their education due to society already determining their roles. Their roles are already set by their backgrounds and people already believe they are not capable of fulfilling any career that requires thinking. They have to indirectly establish a new identity beyond their home life in school to succeed.

When a person succeeds, they tend to forget their background. This is because the situation which they were trying to rid themselves of was so damaging, that they want to entirely forget that part of their past existed. The nurse and Esperanza chose different ways of expressing gratitude. The nurse seems as if she would thank her teachers at an acceptance speech while Esperanza would naturally thank her parents and the oppressed women on Mango Street. The incident at the vaccination clinic had to have occurred at this location for the nurse to be reminded of how she once was. Both ladies came from a low economic class, yet managed to get out of their poor situation.
Dasia and Tolu

Pawn and antique shops have appeal to both Francie and Esperanza. The fact that they shop at second hand shops shows that they have to save up their money and make every cent count, meaning they have to be conscientious of their spending. They are drawn to these places because of the diversity in the shop. There are no two items of the same origin or look. Each item for sale had a previous owner, so they can imagine stories about the objects for sale. This draws them in because they use stories as an outlet, so a room full of stories attracts them.

As their families face economic struggle and continuous moving, Esperanza and Francie have a constant in their life with reading. To them, reading is a way to rid of their troubles and open up a new world of possibilities where they can lead a life where their needs are met. The loss of luxury in their life is replaced with the fictional stories that they wish to be their own.

On Mango Street, Esperanza relates herself to the house because she feels that it is an important aspect of her life growing up along with the significant people around her. In a Tree Grows in Brooklyn Francine relates herself to a tree. the tree is significant in that it can relate back to the saying that instead of a tree necessarily growing in Brooklyn, Francis is the tree growing in brooklyn and her life story there. Is explained.
