This is because the situation which they were trying to rid themselves of was so damaging, that they want to entirely forget that part of their past existed. The nurse and Esperanza chose different ways of expressing gratitude. The nurse seems as if she would thank her teachers at an acceptance speech while Esperanza would naturally thank her parents and the oppressed women on Mango Street. The incident at the vaccination clinic had to have occurred at this location for the nurse to be reminded of how she once was. Both ladies came from a low economic class, yet managed to get out of their poor situation.

Each item for sale had a previous owner, so they can imagine stories about the objects for sale.
