  • What was your first experience with race? Although this was not a direct experience it was something that I saw through the news on TV. I saw many families being separated on TV. Specifically Mexicans because they were trying to come to the US to seek a better life. I saw how the kids would be separated from their parents and how some would just be left alone with no one to take care of them. 
  • How old were you? I think I was about 14 or 15 years old when I saw this on TV.
  • What emotions do you associate with the experience? The emotion that I was mainly feeling was just pure sadness. Having to see literal kids barely in kindergarten being left alone with no one to take care of them.
  • Have you ever talked about the experience? Yes I did. Me and my mom talked about it.
  • How have your early experiences with race shaped your worldview? This experience did change my view of the world.

    I think that the spirit of Ubuntu is alive and well today in African American culture. This is because people will always try their best to help the people around them in any way possible. Whether it is helping them with money situations and other things. I would say the most recent and big event that shows this is the Black Live Matter movement. 

    2. Compare and contrast in detail and provide examples of any parallels/similarities that you have been able to identify between African cultures and African American culture. Has this concept of Ubuntu changed your worldview at all? Explain.

    I would say that the concept of Ubuntu might have changed a bit, but this is only because of time and the world that we live in now.

    A concept that I feel like is the least present in the African American community is Inclusive Metaphysical Epistemology which means affective and cognitive learning.

    The one that I am choosing is Imani which means Faith. This resonates with me because I always have faith no matter what. I have seen this value in action in the African American community before. For example the Black Lives Matter movement. Everyone was standing up for themselves against police brutality. Everyone was unified and had faith.

    1. Under the category of Nata Measures I chose Birthplace of self, siblings, natural parents, grandparents, and extended family. I chose them because they shape the person that I am today. 

    2. Under the Category of Behavioral Measure I chose Language use patterns. Friendship and acquaintance affiliation patterns.  Print and electronic media use patterns, music, clothing, and food preferences. Participation in cultural and religious activities. I chose these because they are things that I start to do more often and something very precious to me. Friendship means a lot to me. 

    3. Under the Category of Subjective measures I chose  Role models and preferred reference groups. I chose this because My role models are my parents and they are people that I look up to. 

    4. Under the Category of Situation-Contextual Measures I chose Home-Family, Work, Education, and Community. The reason I chose them is because I think education is an important thing that shapes the person you are. 

    3.2 The Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM) 

    1. My Multi group Ethnic Identity measure score is 45. 

    2. To me the score means that I am in tough with my ethnic Identity. 

    3. I think that this mean I am very attached and have a higher sense of Ethnic Identity and bonding with a common group of people. 

    4. Something that surprised me was just how attached I am to my ethnic roots because of my score. I knew I was involved but not heavily involved. 

    3.3 Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale 

    1. The score that I got was 15. 

    2. To me the score means that I am an average person. 

    3. I believe that my score is the way that it is because I am an average person. Everything that I do I a m pretty average at it. Im not particularly good at anything. 

    POST 3.4: RACIAL IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT PADLET POST

    1.  The state of racial Identity development that I am in is Integrative Awareness. 

    2. I think that I am in this stage because of what it states which is ¨ there is much more to them than their race or gender and how both groups are able to positively Identify with there own racial group while also acknowledging that other aspects of there Identity. ¨ 

    3. An example of how I think I have passed through the previous stages is because of how hard I work and what I would do to be successful. 

    4. One thing that I learned from this process is that there are different stages of Racial Identity.

     An article that that helped me understand my own racial/ethnic identity better is an article called Mexican Culture : Custom and Tradition. It talks about varouis things for example their language, foods, and art.

    I dont think that we live in a post racial society because we still see and hear about discrimination. 

    3. What is your personal definition of race and do you think that race is a social construct, a biological construct or something else? Please explain your reasoning.

    To me race is a group of people that come from a certain area. I think that race is a social construct because it talks about physical features and other characteristics.

    The article talks about race and race identity are social construct and I would have to agree with the resource.
