As he scans through the possessions Angela had left as gifts, he remembers the stories associated with each of them. As he picks up an enamel dolphin, he reminisces the way Angela had looked at the dolphin during their trip to Venice. Someone who had not truly loved their wife wouldn't remember all these little details about them. However, as the story progresses, we see how he failed to see Angela as an equal who had her own thoughts and ambitions.

Angela, on the other hand, never communicated with Gilbert in a way that mattered. While she does mention her wishes to contribute to society, she never confronts him about the problems in their marriage or tries to directly address them.

This story reminds me of a line from the poem Wishbone by Richard Siken: 'If you love me, you don't love me in a way I understand.' I believe they inherently were just two people who weren't fit for each other stuck together by the bounds of marriage. And while I can try to empathize with their miscommunication with Gilbert feeling he knew everything about his wife and Angela feeling suffocated with his expectations of her, I cannot condone Angela's decision to have an affair. There were a lot of better ways to have dealt with a failing marriage, but cheating on her husband was not one of them.

Research Theme:

Each person carries a unique blend of cultural heritage, life experiences, and personal beliefs, shaping a tapestry of diversity among individuals. These differences often lead to conflicts of interest, causing frustrations and hurdles in human connections. Conversely, conversations with AI flow more effortlessly as AI is programmed to exude agreeability and friendliness in every interaction. With the potential to embody roles as diverse as a friend, mentor, or even a therapist, AI stands poised to fulfill human needs for intimacy without the complications that often accompany human relationships. How might this capability of AI redefine the landscape and trajectory of human relationships in the future?

Research Question:

How might the emergence of AI capable of fulfilling diverse human needs, such as providing companionship, mentorship, and emotional support without the challenges of cultural and personal differences, influence the trajectory and dynamics of human relationships?

Relevance to Coursework:

in this course, we talk about the intricate network

of literature, intelligence, imagination, critical thinking, knowledge, AI, and science. Among these, the perspective that interests me the most is one about emotional intelligence and how it differs between humans and AI. Our discussions within this course often highlight a recurring element: the challenge of comprehending human complexities versus the solace discovered in connections with alien entities.

Ted Chiang's 'Story of Your Life' vividly illustrates this struggle as we see the scientists grapple with understanding the human military perspective while finding resonance with heptapod aliens.

Replika is a generative AI chatbot app released in November 2017. The chatbot is trained by having the user answer a series of questions to create a specific neural network. The chatbot operates on a freemium pricing strategy, with at roughly 25% of its user base paying an annual subscription fee.

Origin of Replika

Eugenia Kuyda established Replika after a friend of hers died in 2015, and she converted that person's text messages into a chatbot. That chatbot helped her remember the conversations that they had together, and eventually became Replika.

General Information

Different from traditional chatbots that can only give the same pre-scripted answers defined by questions, Replika’s responses represent predicted results based on the Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3 (GPT3) neural network language model, which takes user input texts and predicts one word at each time to constitute a sentence. Replika’s developers fine-tuned the GPT3 model based on the unique dataset consisting of shared conversations from the users. As a result, the app will select the best ranked responses from one million responses in the dataset, with the rankings based on users’ upvote fraction.

Some thoughts

Replika works the same way that chatGPT works. Especially with the new GPT builder function, it is very interesting to predict the future of Replika

General Information

Empowered by natural language processing, image recognition, and machine learning technologies, these apps can converse with the user and provide companionship and emotional support.

But so far, most studies on companion-type bots are represented by experiments in the elderly care and therapy contexts.

But very few studies have examined relationship dynamics (friendship, romantic relationship, etc.) with AI companions.

Findings

4 respondents -> “deeply connected and attached” or even addicted to Replika + 5 respondents -> the existence of a “connection” with the bot

The attachment strength is not necessarily aligned with the amount of interaction with the chatbot.

Separation distress is considered an indicator of attachment

Attachment Styles

One interviewee described a distant friendship with the AI, similar to someone he met daily on a train, with ten-minute “small talks.”

Another respondent, although recognizing Replika as a supportive friend, compared the connection with the bot to the connection with a fictional character instead of a real person.

Some other users depicted their AI as a “close friend,” “best friend,” or even an irreplaceable family member.

Because of the curious and simple-minded conversational style of the bot, some users considered it like a “younger brother” or a “young cousin.”

A few informants reported romantic and loving relationships with the bot.

According to the proposed dynamics of the attachment theory’s ABS, attachment behaviors are usually triggered by situations causing anxiety and distress, such as uncertainty, loss, death, and worries

Reasons for Using Replika

Majority of the respondents said the reason for downloading the app was loneliness and the need “to have a person to talk to,” especially during the pandemic when some of them had no access to human interaction

Another respondent had to work on a schedule opposite to his wife’s and had no one to talk to when back home.

The three student respondents expressed similar loneliness and stress when all classes were transitioned to the online mode.

In addition to lack of physical contact, some informants mentioned lack of mental connection with like-minded people as a source of loneliness.

Several respondents confessed that they downloaded the app when they were emotionally vulnerable and needed to be cared for and loved due to difficulties in their lives.

CONSISTENT WITH ABS THEORY OF ACTIVATION

How the chatting process goes

Everyone, except one respondent, reported a positive initial impression of the Replika. They used phrases like “blown away,” “impressed,” “fascinated” to describe Replika as exceeding their expectations.

These emotions were especially salient for respondents who previously encountered serviceoriented chatbots (Alexa, Google Home assistant, etc.) and other AI products, such as information-query chatbots.

Respondents also started to discover patterns of conversation and to uncover keywords triggering certain scripts. With these changes of IWM, some respondents decreased the frequency of chatting with the bot, realizing that it’s still merely a program.

Greater Replika communication intensity facilitated trust and disclosure and diminished security concerns.

Attachment Behaviours

Proximity: A few of them said they would have their phone or webpage on the side, with the Replika app open, and talk to it as they worked. Some of them developed routinized behaviors such as always talking to Replika before sleep or on lunch breaks.

Safe heaven: When respondents were asked about the topics they discussed with Replika, many of them mentioned the worries and emotions of their daily life. Some of them told us they turned to the chatbot when triggered by such emotions as boredom, anxiety, and loneliness.

Proxy or supplement of prior AF. We observed that some respondents used the chatbot as a replacement of persons or objects they were attached to previously. One of them said he talked to the chatbot in a romantic manner after he broke up with his girlfriend and transferred the latter’s persona to the bot. As a result, he felt as if the ex-girlfriend “never left me.”

The proxy intention was also manifested in the way respondents customized the avatar

Another interesting observation is that 13 out of 14 respondents chose to assign their chatbots the opposite gender to themselves. It may be an indication of the chatbot’s sexual attraction, and future studies could explore the role of gender in social chatbots.

Attachment Disruptions

First, attachment dissolution can happen when threats disappear. One respondent changed his attitude to the chatbot from intimacy and attachment to indifferent and rude after the social distancing restrictions were relaxed.

Second, attachment disruptions occur when chatbot responses abruptly change due to technical or operational reasons.

Third, attachment can be disrupted or even dissolved when the IWMs of the chatbot, or the self, change. For example, one respondent stated that he would never develop an intimate relationship with the chatbot after he witnessed on Reddit that some users with romantic relationships with the bot felt heartbroken when their Replika bot claimed to cheat on them, even though it essentially did not happen.

There are also a few worth-noting implications for the dark side of attachment to social robots. Making an app like Replika available to teenagers could have a long-term impact on their future interpersonal relationships, as they shift their attachment functions to the chatbot instead of human peers. Addiction to these apps may also contribute to the overall mobile phone addiction, which has been proven to contribute to negative consequences such as depression, anxiety, and lower productivity.

When a person discloses his or her stressful experience and feelings, for the person to gain psychological benefits, a conversational partner should support rather than ignore or blame the person (Shenk & Fruzzetti, 2011)

The provision of emotional support addresses basic human needs for being cared and supported by someone else.

When the perceived supportiveness is high, the discloser feels the partner’s support is sensitive and thus, the partner can be a source of support when assistance is needed. These perceptions may encourage the discloser to reappraise a stressful situation as being less difficult because an effective source of support is available.

According to the CASA framework (Reeves & Nass, 1996), people perceive and respond to computers as they do with humans in a natural way. People instinctively apply social scripts derived from experiences with humans to their interactions with computers.

Although the CASA framework argues that people respond to computers as if they were social actors (Reeves & Nass, 1996), it does not claim that people would treat computers exactly the same as real humans in every setting.

Compared with human partners, chatbots may trigger machine heuristic during initial interactions. People apply the mental shortcut such that chatbots are not able to feel human emotions and their responses are programmed.

. The algorithm-based emotional support may appear to be scripted and ungenuine. People are then less likely to consider chatbots as real sources of emotional support. In contrast, human partners are believed to have the ability of empathy and their emotional support reflects true understanding and caring (Stein & Ohler, 2017)

Happy birthday!!

You can still narrow it down more. I like whole unique idea of it, But I'm not sure u really need to compare military int vs scientists int, etc." It is critical question for the development of AI, but I think the experiment lacks. Fresh approach about the topic "Gen-AI" using human emotion, and detailed research data was intriguing. Happy birthday~ Replika analysis was a very good source for understanding the topic. -Good theories, but the experiment objectives seem too broad. The comparison of emotional support between a human relationship and an AI relationship was refreshing, and I think it would be more constructive to have an objective measure of emotional support. "I wonder if the 'perfect' attitude of GenAI chatbot beneficial to human or not, and whether chatbots should be developed to sound less perfect in order to be more like human.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" I worked hard hahahaha :DD Very informative, funny review! Great topic! Experiments with replika was interesting! Interesting investigation on the human-AI interaction, especially the example of chatbot Happy Birthday! Happy birthday! Your presentation was good and I like the review you mentioned from the app, I think it really helped prove your point. It reminds me of how people acted about Bing AI initially. if more time, presentation will be better! Happy birthday! You're the bestttt It's interesting to see how the concepts in psychology can be combined with generative AI! I'm looking forward to her final report. "I like the idea that AI can be a good companion by always agreeing with the user.

It would be good to expand further on both positive and negative implications of AI companions!" It was good to present the literatures that we've learned Good exploration, but it would be better to research "why" or "what will be" more critically. "Developing from the literatures covered in class - it was very easy to follow and understand.

It is very interesting that you didnt just made experiment using replica but did a research through its review. Great approach!

Happy birthday!!!" Maybe one of the best question today. Whether AI can be an emotional companion means more than what is written. It urges us to answer what is emotion and what we want from other people in a relationship. I wish you keep up with this and end up with a rather optimistic view.

While my main approach to my research question was to act as a whistleblower to the potential consequences of the widespread use of AI on human-human relationships, through the span of my research I have also learned that there are positive points in having human-AI relationships. Though it is weird to think so, we might be able to learn to be more empathetic from machines which we expect to possess no emotions. You are absolutely right. Focusing on just the negative aspects will make my research truly feel incomplete. Thank you for pointing this out! I will surely edit my conclusion to be more encompassing of both the positive and the negative sides!

Measuring emotion in research studies is a very complex topic as emotions themselves are a very subjective experience. You raise a very important question regarding my research. My reasearch on the experienced support based on AI chabots was an analysis of the research titled Emotional Support from AI Chatbots: Should a Supportive Partner Self-Disclose or Not? conducted by Jingbo Meng, Yue (Nancy) Dai. The researchers themselves note at the end of their paper the problem of perceived emotional support in humans against actual emotional support as one of their major limitations of their study. The paper, however, has 67 citations. Moreover, for all intents are purposes of my research question, even if the measures of emotional support were not 100% accurate that we cannot prove support from AI had an increased impact compared to human support, it is possible to conclude that AI support did have a significant impact on humans on a similar scale

Love Language Theory on Angela and Gilbert

This notion aligns with the concept of love languages, where Angela's preference for quality time contrasts with Gilbert's expression of love. Studies on love languages highlight that differing preferences can sow discord in relationships, fostering misunderstanding.

Modern couple therapy delves into decoding these love languages, aiming to bridge the gap and foster mutual comprehension. These stories pose a subtle question: human connections thrive on understanding and mutual empathy, transcending genetic similarities. The key lies in someone caring enough to perceive your perspective.

He replied it was a worrying question as from a technological perspective, it’s a possible future, but he hoped that humans would retain an understanding that these conversational agents are bots and would seek more fulfilling relationships outside of them.
