Rainwater harvesting is one of the most effective methods of water management and water conservation. Northeastern states with large tribal populations living in scattered rural settlements have been dependent on natural water sources for a long time. Water from natural sources such as springs is usually clear. It also has health benefits as minerals get dissolved in water and move through underground rocks. Springs containing a significant amount of minerals are sometimes known as ‘mineral springs’. A method is commonly known as rooftop harvesting in which rainwater is collected in tanks and is used by the villagers. This water can be used for direct consumption and for recharging groundwater through simple filtration devices. This stored water is used for drinking, gardening, irrigation and many other purposes. It is also one of the most promising alternatives for supplying fresh water in the face of increasing water scarcity and escalating demand in rural and urban areas. It is a sustainable form of utilisation of water without endangering the survival of future generations.

Maternal mortality rate is an example of this. Having a primary health center can solve this problem to some extend. Another good option would be to come up with easy to handle medical equipment's which could help them out in emergency situations.

I had witnessed this technique in our Mata Amritanandmayi's ashram in Kerala. It is a type of composting in which a specific species of worms are being used to break down waste compost within a period of 3 - 4 months. But compost must be removed in stages as the worms process it. It is more efficient than ordinary composting and produces richer compost. These worm's optimal temperature range is around 15 - 35 degrees Celsius. Lower temperatures hamper reproduction and higher temperatures kill the worms or make them leave. Worms are very sensitive to drought so use of worms in very dry areas is not recommended unless a reliable water source is available. This compost material is later used in agriculture where the product does not contain any harmful chemicals or components.

Due to a major lack of toilets, some 600 million Indians are forced to defecate in the open. In rural India, this figure is as high as 65 percent. Many women, girls and elderly do feel a desperate need for a toilet, but they think that it is unreasonable to make the demand considering the financial crisis of the family and the struggle of their parents or head of the family. Furthermore, women and girls in rural India have limited access to feminine hygiene products as well as the day to day challenge of where to dispose of their makeshift pads. So now every household in Punsari has a toilet and a drainage system, the village has two functioning primary schools, a primary health centre and street lights around the village.
To ensure that the toilets are being used correctly, United for Hope regularly conducts workshops and WASH campaigns. The organisation has placed a teacher in one of the schools to carry on its programmes, especially around topics like proper hand washing.
WASH stands for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene and is a programme aimed at raising awareness around proper hygiene and sanitation usage.
