It is my honor to be here. I am Harold Baumgarten,
and I fought on D-Day. Okay, so there were many different types of troops.
There were paratroopers which were the people who had to jump out of planes and
parachute, there were people on boats, and there were pilots. For me I was one
of the people who was on a Higgins boats. And the whole time we were in the
boat, we were praying. Although for me I only knew one prayer, but I least one
was better than none. Now before I get into showing you things that I used in
battle, I going to tell you what my life was like before the war and during the
battle. Before the war when I was in military classes I tried to enroll into
the army at 17, but the army wouldn't allow me. So I decided to stay in school.
One year later the war broke out and I was drafted into battle. (What are you
doing? )We prepared so much for battle that after the first two weeks you would
be able to do it with your eyes closed. I mean some of the men with me had such
good aim and we all knew where we were going to stand that they would shoot
bullets between my legs, but that's not important. When the battle finally came
no one knew the final destination until we got on the boats and we were told
where to attack. We all started to pray. I was worried and scared, but I knew I
had to stay fierce. I didn't know what to do so I continued to journal my
feelings. Now that you know what was happening to me I am going to show you map
of where we went and invaded.

This map was the only map we got before the attack. Now our map wasn't detailed like this, but we all knew where to go. what you need to know is that we didn't know what was going to happen next. After the war , experts were actually able to make maps that showed what really happened like this map. We never expected the battle to go until the end of July. Here on the map you can see that the red stands for people on the boats like me the boats could go on land, and the blue represents the paratroopers. This map shows that the Canadians and British were a big part in the battle. Now the Canadians were not a major part of the war, but this battle. but one of my best buddies was from another country. He spoke English and we were speaking about how great it would be to meet each other after the war. It was heartbreaking because I knew this never happen now because he was killed in the battle. I met my friends family a couple of years after the war and told them what had happened to their son. They were proud that he was praying on the boat. As I said before before all of us were praying.

Now I am going to show you on the map which battles I was in and where I invaded with the others. (Show them). When we were on that trail we often took rest, but no one would get that much sleep either because we were worrying about family or/and afraid they would be killed in the night. Sometimes we would wake up covered in mud. Because often the grounds would be muddy. This is because when we would set up a tent are boots would get the floors all muddy when going inside. When we got to some of the bigger battles(point to bigger battles on map) which as you can see are on the map, we would always be wondering who was going to stay here. And I guess God was on my side and he wanted me to stay. Now that you have a background we will move on to my diary. These were tough times for me so I just journaled my thoughts. {p1	M

This journal was a great importance to me, it was not my only where all my thoughts and feelings went, it was way to escape from death around me. This journal goes all the way back to 1943. Majority of my diary is me before the battle because we were training for this battle for 2 years. Some of my diaries entries were me getting into the army. One of my entries that I remember is that me and some other guys had to stay out in a tent with no blankets, but are coats in the smack down middle of winter. I remember how cold I was and my coat being thick, but rough for a blanket. The diary entry I will be reading you a little later is when I was on the boats when we just got told where we were going to invade. So, you all remember how I said I was scared on the boats, well I was praying, and journaling that i wanted my family or someone to find this if I was killed. On the boat everything seemed, so peaceful yet not. If I were to die I would want to remember everything around. This journal had all my feelings, I was nervous that someone would make fun of me for having a diary, but at this point I don’t think anyone cared just as long as they lived, and god answered their prayers. Now that you know what was happening let's hop into my mind. (Read Excerpt). Now you guys understand what was happening to me, let's move on to the things that i have been talking about so much, a scale model of a Higgins boat.

This is a scale model of what the Higgins boats looked like. As you know I was a troop that was on one of these boats. Now you see the back with the open area, well that's where 36 troops would sit. Everyday, during trading we would be in these boats and practice the attack. When the invasion was a go no one knew until we got on the boat, as you know we were praying. When we got close to shore there was gun shots every where. Most of the boats were bombed and ones that survived were stored in museums. That's why I couldn't bring you an actual boat here today. Now I going to call your table groups up 1by1 to come see the boat. Be CAREFUL. Now that's over what's the point of seeing the boat without learning about what it is.

Now I bet you been wondering what's in here since I arrived. Well this is a bag of what we carried on D-Day. Some of the stuff in here is a sewing kit, a tank repair kit, 24-hour ration kit, a blood chit, and a compass. Now this is just some of the stuff that was with us. Now I going to pull out a random thing and explain how it was used.

Tank Repair Kit

Now this was used to help fix a tank. Often if a tank was being shot at then bullets would hit a fuse or a fuel tank. You need to know that sometimes the tools would not be enough and the tank would be completely destroyed and you wouldn't be able to fix the tank. Tools were heavy and were a needed thing to carry. There were times that we had multiple of tools and we left those behind. As you can see these tools are not the exact tools I used in battle, but they are similar. A way you can tell is the plastic and rubber, back in the war we only had metal tools like this wrench. Now I am going to pass these tools around so all of you can get a better look at them. Any questions.

Sewing Kit

Now this was used for if are uniforms ripped or if we needed to sew a badge on. Often times we wouldn't use this as much, because we were in battle and it's pretty tough to sew while you trying not to die. Often times the doctors would have this. I never went to the doctors and you never wanted to, the doctors were not like they are today. Now I will be passing this around and if there any questions please ask.

24-hour rations

Now this is what we ate every day. There were times that it would get to the point where it got to you would have to save some stuff.
