Love how you empower students with a clear and purposeful framework. Grading for grammar can become reductive, pointless and damaging to emerging writers. I imagine it is also very boring, overall, as well. This provides a purpose that the teacher and students can share, and is so great! This entire demo dives into the weeds of a topic (corrective feedback) that can be the bane of a teacher's existence. A wonderful reminder that intent can arry you through an otherwise laborious process. So I guess it’s reassuring that I’m seeing and coding things in the same way that you and DWP are. I also think this makes a lot of sense with international students, maybe more than it does with native English speakers from here: International students have definitely been schooled in English grammar, and will actually recognize and understand what you’re asking for. I think our international students have a thing or two to show our native speakers who didn’t get that heavy dose of grammar when they were learning. Also: On Yanling - I’ve had students I had in tenth grade re-up with me as seniors, and then they tracked me to Napa Valley College and signed up for my whole sequence there - 90, 120, and 125. THAT is pretty special and I loved it, so I'm glad you cherish it too.

I appreciate your organized, calm and supportive teaching style. Many years ago, I used to do a lot of unintegrated grammar lessons or feedback and have more recently given up grammar feedback since I'm responding to drafts and don't want to focus on grammar at that time. It's interesting to me to consider using a different space for grammar and style work. I know the grammar ship isn't to be abandoned. Thanks for everything to think about!

I love that stakes are low in this approach, and students are only writing for 10 minutes and get such clear, targetted feedback. You have demystified for me how I might approach teaching grammar in a way that empowers students to understand their own patterns and see their own errors to fix them on their own. I'm now excited to teach grammar next year and I will stop shying away from what I previously thought was the most boring, horrible, traumatizing type of writing instruction for students!
