So the French helped pay for expeditions to find First Nations because fur trades were a big income at this time.

Though the King of France did not profit much from the fur trade itself," and yet, the king still funded his trip, but why? hopefuly i can read on to find out why...

Emma-The fur trade was significant, because it created many companies like the Hudson's Bay company. This provided jobs for both First Nations peoples, British, and French alike. On page 13 it says, "First Nations in upper Canada paddled along the river to reach the British Hudson's Bay trading post." This sentence shows that these companies were held high in respect, since they paddled along rivers to reach them. The Hudson's Bay company is still around today.

OWEN.W- On page 9 something really interesting was that there was a battle of the fur trade where people would trade with the first Nations. In the Canada fur trade there was a significant issue and the beavers were going extinct. Another downside of the fur trade was that many first nations people were getting diseases which was killing most of the first nations. This was interesting because the fur trade was an important time in Canadian history and I thought that the fur trade was 100% good. As you can tell the fur trade had downsides to is aswell

Syrus-The fur trade was important because the French and British made an income trading goods. If they were not able to make money they would have ever been able to live and colonize canada into the country it is today. Also the French became war allies with the first nations. This was good becuase they became freinds wth one another. The French were also trying to make the First nations embrace Catholicism. That worked and made the relation with the French and First Nations stronger. After reading the text I learned their was a big race between France and Britain to get furs and colonize. I read that there was a treaty that gave land to the British wich help to cut of the French from getting furs. I wonder if that rivalry between France and Britain still exist.

Owen.W - I found it interesting that the women played such a big role in the fur trade. During the 1500's since women were not reconized as much as women were. Women would do things such as preparing the fur for trade, skinning, cleaning and tanning the fur, which always increased the value of the fur. Women had one of the most important jobs during the fur trade.

Emma-The fur trade was significant to Canada. The British wanted as many countries as possible, but the French wanted Canada. On page 54 it says, "The Canadiens needed to sustain themselves, so they entered the fur trade." The fur trade provided jobs, which allowed more people to come to Canada. The fur trade assisted in colonizing Canada.

Keira- The French and First Nations had a relationship that was useful to both groups. The French depended on the First Nations to supply the furs that they sold in Europe. First Nations depended on Europeans to supply European-made goods like tools, such as rifles, metal traps, sewing needles, and cooking pots. The French and First Nations became their military allies. Military allies are two or more parties that agree to support one another in case of war.

Keira- Hudson's Bay Company was established in 1670 by a group of English merchants, with the help of two French fur traders. It is North Americas oldest company. HBC (Hudson's Bay Company) just kept expanding thru Canada all the way out to the Pacific Northwest (modern-day Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia) and the North (Alaska, the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut). By the late 18th century, competition forced HBC to grow into the interior of North America. HBC began modernizing in 1912, resulting in the “original six” Hudson’s Bay Company department stores: Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Victoria, Saskatoon, and Winnipeg. Retail expansion across the country would finally be achieved.

Keira- Woman were really relied on during the fur trading time. They did everything to prepare the fur for its buyer. They also would act as interpreters, actors, or guides once they learned the language. A young Dene woman named Thanadelthur was a brave women in the early 1700's, she was captured by the Cree Nation and escaped a year later. Then, Thanadelthur headed to a Hudson’s Bay Company outpost in York Factory. Where she brought together the Dene and Cree First Nations and helped
them make peace. Her efforts paved the way for years of peaceful trading with Hudson’s Bay Company. I'm wondering why she tried to make peace and talk to the Cree Nation again after they captured her? Why wouldn't she want to kill them or just stay away from them and hide? She could have got captured again or even worse!

Syrus- I read this and thought "That sucks!" The text says that the Europeans nearly made the beaver go extinct. That would not be good at all. This could have lead to the extinction of the black bear, hawk, and other animals because they are all predators of the beaver. There could have been and ecological crisis. Also the Europeans had spread diseases to the First nations killing Thousands. That means many fur traders would have died and not been able to feed the "economy". I wonder what else nearly went exctint or died?
