Country focus: Iraq
Australia's Iraqi population has notably expanded since 1976, surging during events like the Gulf War and the Syrian civil war. Escaping persecution and sectarian conflicts, Iraqi immigrants form a diverse community facing settlement difficulties due to their refugee status and regional conflict exposure. In 2011, over 60% lived in New South Wales, with lower income levels than Australian-born citizens (Evason, 2017). Three prevalent health issues outlined in the Australian Refugee Health Practice Guide, frequently observed in individuals arriving from Iraq are oral health, mental health and latent tuberculosis infection (Iraqi Australians, n.d.).

Oral Health:
Among Iraqi refugees, dental problems like cavities, missing teeth, and gum disease are common, often worsened by factors like low fluoride exposure, socioeconomic status, and pre-arrival trauma. Post-arrival challenges include limited dental knowledge, settlement priorities, and access barriers. The treatment for dental problems is to guide individuals from refugee-like backgrounds to a public dental service for assessment which offers essential oral health guidance.

Mental Health:
Many Refugees and asylum seekers often endure trauma and face mental health challenges when adapting to a new country, exacerbated by dangerous journeys and detention. Refugee children commonly experience post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety. The one treatment available for refugees is a regular review and providing support to reduce feelings of isolation.

Latent tuberculosis infection:
Screening and treating immigrants, particularly refugees, from high-TB-incidence countries is crucial in Australia's efforts to control TB transmission and reduce cases. Immigrants often carry latent TB infection (LTBI), with a 5-10% risk of developing active TB, making early diagnosis essential, and tailored screening and treatment are necessary due to varying LTBI rates among refugee-like population

(Australian Red Cross, 2022),
(Australian Refugee Health» Primary Care for People of Refugee Backgrounds, n.d.)

For me, the most relevant aspect of competency Standard 12.2 was acknowledging the existence and comprehending the implications of systemic biases within institutional policies, resource allocation, and laws. This standard has been a professional turning point, broadening my awareness of systemic biases in healthcare. Delving deeper, I now possess a profound understanding of their influence. This heightened awareness drives me to advocate for fairness and justice in patient care. I'm deeply committed to addressing systemic biases, viewing it as both a professional duty and a personal mission to ensure equitable care for all patients. Furthermore, this newfound awareness underscores the importance of ongoing education and advocacy in my profession. It's not just a skill in my toolkit; it's a driving force behind my dedication to promoting fairness and justice in healthcare, ultimately striving for better outcomes for every patient (Culturally Responsive Clinical Practice: Working with People from Migrant and Refugee Backgrounds, 2019).
