This clock shows all the time that has been wasted for Gatsby. He has waited five long and draining years to be reconnected with the “love of his life”. It was a disappointment to Gatsby to realize that what he had spent longing for didn't want him. He had spent so much of his life believing that Daisy and him were going to live happily ever after. Gatsby also wasted time being someone he wasn't, he didn't let anyone inside to get to know him. He spent the majority of his life contained in a bubble waiting for someone to show up. Watching the time waste by. He wants to be able to go back in time to when Daisy loved him. He wants to change the past. He doesn’t want to let go of the past.

It also shows how some people in life just look for the things that are easy and come with no effort. The things that are only beneficial to themselves.
