This is a presentation of an outline of a lesson plan for 1st grade. This is intended for any elementary teacher who would like to see a lesson plan that incorporates brain-based learning strategies. This will be a 1st grade lesson on greater than, less than, and equal to. These brain based learning strategies in the plan can be modified for many subjects, and grade levels and are intended for any elementary classroom.

To start the lesson the teacher shows either a funny video that shows comparing numbers or a video that is a real-world situation in which comparing numbers is used. Make sure the video is age-appropriate. A video engages the students right from the start and gets them interested. This strategy of getting their attention and engaging them is based on neuroscience. It has been shown that students tend to learn more and are more likely to place information into long-term memory if they are engaged.

This is where the teacher will explain the concept to the students. A crocodile mouth cut out will be used to display the 3 symbols and the process of what they mean and how they are used between a set of numbers will be modeled. Using visual cutouts is another strategy that comes from neuroscience. It gives students something relatable to use in learning and a crocodile is something students of this age are interested in. Students will be given smaller crocodile mouth cut-outs to use during practice which also helps the tangible piece giving them something to manipulate. Science has proven that when student can be interactive and manipulate something, they retain information better. This strategy will be used in the next phase.

Students will be placed in pairs and given a set of numbered cards 1-20. Each student will take a card and lay it down. They will then take turns placing the correct crocodile mouth cut-out between the two numbers. A challenge that often arises is that since the students are still becoming familiar with numbers they are having trouble deciding which number is larger or smaller. The teacher then gives the students some type of small object that they can count out and lay in a row that represent their number drawn. This gives them a tangible and visible representation of the number allowing for easier completion of the task. Also always have the students say the number they have drawn aloud and once they symbol has been placed have the students say the mathematical phrase such as "2 is less than 12". This activity is a representative of a brain-based learning strategy. It engages multiple senses such as hearing, sight, and touch to help the students learn and retain information.

Practice activities

This next activity is a mathematical version of musical chairs. Students will have a partner they walk around the classroom with as music plays. When the music stops the students will look up at the board where a set of 2 numbers with a space between them for a symbol will be displayed. The pairs decide what symbol needs to be inserted and lay down using their bodies to form the symbol. This is also a brain-based strategy as it incorporates music and movement which are both proven to enhance engagement, learning, and retention.

Review and assess

Review activities can be done at the teachers discretion and an exit ticket with 5 problems that require students to insert the correct symbol can be given. This allows the teacher to evaluate if the concept needs further instruction.
