In Last Stop on Market, CJ learns about perspective and how he can see the light on everything. Since CJ needs to learn this through his Nana and other people, the bus and his nana are bigger on the cover.

What is a Literary Journey?

*Where characters experience undergo a change of some kind and in turn grow as a person.

*A shift in perspective or scenery that leads to growth

*The process a character goes through that results in them having a new perspective/experience.

*The path a character and or characters take to gain a deeper knowledge of themselves and their surroundings.

*Leaving the comfort a character is in to expand or change themselves

*Characters going from one place to another

It can foster sympathy towards others

Mirrors: You can see how your own thoughts and imagination shape the way you see the world and judge others

The spectrum of journey is very broad and is the majority of stories understanding what a journey consist of is important for life

Thought this unit, my understanding of the concept of journey has evolved a lot. From the beginning, the general idea of what journey was in my head was just a physical journey; this unit had helped me understand that there are so many different kinds of journeys that might not even include any physical movement. There are socio-cultural, love, mental, and so many more kinds of journeys that can exist in literature. A journey can come in plenty of different formats and structures, but generally they consist of a character going through a process that helps them discover or learn something new to further evolve themself as character.

Along with this, there were a variety of different themes and patterns to continuously appear throughout our text set. One of the most common patterns to occur in the books we read was the concept of an outsider or outsiders helping the main character with the journey they are going on in some way. More often than not, these “outsiders” that helped throughout the journey were a family member of the main character, however it was not uncommon for the outsider to be a community member or a community as a whole. While it was most common an outsider to be someone close to the main character, sometimes this pattern would present itself as someone the main character didn’t necessarily know that pushed the journey along in a negative way.

No matter what type of journey was necessarily being represented in the books we read, there was a way to connect the journey to real life events that would happen. A very common story line first a journey was a character learning more about their culture or community, which would not be out of the ordinary to happen in real life to a child. But there were also some books, like Don’t Touch My Hair, that followed the premise of learning to set personal boundaries or something along those lines that can be beneficial for a child to learn about.
